Blogging in the Blogosphere
English 10, 52, 100
FORMAT:
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class. Write what English class you are in whether it is English 52, 60, 100 and what College.
For example, one would write:
Yue Hayes
English 52
Cerritos College
Post #1
Homelessness
In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/organization, content, current events, pop culture or literature as a TITLE that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post or Post #50, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.
Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,
- reflect on the day's class discussion or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
-
- How does it change the way you think or thought before on the subject?
-
- What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.
Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.
*I will enforce the blogosphere by either deleting your hard work, making an example out of you here in the realm of the blogosphere or in class* . . .
1. Use a quote: Introduce the author, title of work, and a verb, such as says: For example, Plato, in “Allegory of the Cave,” says, “Better to be a poor servant of a poor master than live as they do after their manner” (paragraph number).
2. Do relate the piece of literature to your life in some fashion and/ or media, pop culture, current events, and so forth.
3. Each post is worth 10 points—I have given you some sample posts for examples
4. I get an e-mail sent from the blogosphere saying who posted, and that is how I tally points.

Hello Everyone!
It was great to see last semester's faces again. I am anxious to get to know the new personalities in class. For the new kids on the block, I know Mr. Hsiao refers to "the people who had this class before" a lot and you may feel a little left out. I would just like to say that we have been in your spot before, and the unfamiliarity will end soon. For those who are shy by nature...get ready to break free and feel free to express yourself. This is a great class that will not only teach you helpful techniques in English, but teach you a lot about yourself.
Good Luck, and stick with this class no matter how intimidating it may seem.

HELLO PEOPLE. ITS GOOD TO SEE A LOT OF FAMILIAR FACES IN THE CLASS. I'M MORE GLAD TO SEE THE UNFAMILIAR FACES THIS SEMSETER. THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE NEW TO THE PROF. AS TIME GOES BY YOU WILL BECOME ACCUSTOMED TO THE TEACHING SKILLS. TO THOSE OF YOU WHO FEEL LIKE YOUR OUT OF THE LOOP, DO NOT WORRY THAT WILL PASS. I STARTED OFF LAST SEMESTER IN PROF. That's a damn good quote, Amador. I'm interested to see how this class pans out. I had John as a teacher's aide some time ago before everyone started calling him "Mr. H" and I've gotta say that it seems like he's become even more abrasive. haha I've always liked his rough style though; it's this kind of style that brings out better in me. I'm really looking forward to this whole family environment that John's been estalishing in his classes as well.
I don't know how to make one of those blogger profiles yet, so I'm just posting with my livejournal ID for now due to lack of time at the moment. See you kids in class.

I was so glad i picked it a second time around! i cant wait to meet the people in class and talk to the people i already know and get even closer! whoo hoo!!
Newbies:
You'll love Professor Hsiao. he really makes you WANT to learn. Not forcing you or anything, but just the way he is and the way he teaches. He inspired me to WANT to take political science. I did not want to because i did not care for anything, but after joining his class im like "FEED ME KNOWLEDGE!" sounds lame but its true. lol.

-Emiliano Zapata
I live by this quote!
Things have occurred in my spiritual life that have left me with doubts. My faith in God and Jesus Christ is strong. My Faith in humanity is weak. Through out my whole life, i have been told what to believe, until i started to notice things that did not make sense to me. I started to read the bible for myself and find my own answers. What my religion was teaching me was contradictory to the word of the Lord. When i would bring up questions to my youth minister or priest, they would turn me away because they thought i was trying to be arguementative when i was really searching for the truth. When they could not answer my questions i gave of catholicism, instead of staying and telling me what to believe. I have a mind of my own. I do not need anyone to force me to believe their way.
These are my views and opinions. Dont trip on them.

On a lighter note. . .
I like how Mr.Hsiao burned me twice this week and its barely the start of the semester.
Its gonna be a long semester.

Post numero Deuce!
Well class was very interesting today. the new people have brought alot to the table. very smart and very profound. All the quotes made me think about my life nd how the quote effects me. the one quote i keep repeating in my head is the one that both Art and Carlos mentions ...
"I'd rather die on my feet, than live on my knees"
that quote is so true. In my point of view it means that even if i make mistakes and fall down alot, i can get back up and be strongeer. i can fall, pick myself up and be proud of what i am. idk maybe it has nothing to do with what i thought but when i hear it over and over thats what is carved into my brain.
Anyway, i'm going to bed because i have work in the morning. night night everyone!
sweet dreams, and remember ...

I really like Zachary's quote. Whenever i read it, it reminds me of the saying "you don't know what you have, until you've lost it." I think in the world today we take so many things for granted, that not until it is taken away do we really see how valuable it actually is.
Brian and other future bloggers,
ReplyDeletePlease add a picture to your profile that represents you in the light you want others to see you in.
Also, if you on the profile say that you follow the blog, than your picture shows up on the right top indent of the page, which other students and myself can click on to learn more about you.
That way, it gives everyone a chance to get to know you, here on the blogosphere and even in class and on the subsequent fieldtrips.
Also, good work on the blogging thus far with the quotes and complimenting on them.
I am sensing a common theme among these quotes posted thus far.
Actualization, awareness, sprituality/ belief
Keep it up

Also, a side note about my teaching style. As I have told former students, it is my way of bringing you into the experience.

This quote reminds me that even though I have gone through some crazy stuff in life, I just need to keep moving and not let them stop me from achieving what i deserve. Sometimes bad things happen just to slap you in the face and make you wake up to reality.
I really liked Zack's, Art's, and Carlos's quotes. I myself question and disagree with what the catholic church teaches. I realized that it can be a contradiction by saying that everyone is made in the eyes of God, but still the homosexual people are wrong. That is complete bull! Hey, i'm one of the newbies in the class. The whole "QHQ" thing is confusing me.
In my last class the format was like this:
Q: .........?
H:...............
...............
...............
...............
...............
Q;...........?
i dont know how start
I would appreciate some help
Carlos,
ReplyDeleteSure, if you look to the handout I gave you--that is a QHQ.
Everything runs together, and you start out with a thesis and then QHQ and a sentence explaining why you use the quote that you have chosen. The rest of the one-pager explains either your thesis or your second question. Look to the handout that we went over in class.
Carlos, add more on your profile, your likes music wise/ hobbywise.

Also, for everyone, the handout has many run-ons. I will talk more about that in class. Be careful about that.

Hello to everyone :D
well im a newbee so i have no clue how this thing works and well hopefully i'm doing this right.
the following is my quote that i said in class, which probably none of you understood since i have awful stage fright i apologize! but this quote defiantly hits home for me, don’t get me wrong im not all like war is never the answer I just feel in this case there can be a different approach to ending this long dispute. One thing that really pisses me off (can i say that? anyways..) is how they repot the deaths in Iraq within the military. Like lets say they loose 500 soldiers in a battle they’ll say “500 bodies.” dam jerks what the heck are they talking about bodies don’t they realize those men and women are fathers mothers sons and daughters cousins grandchildren friends, ugh that pisses me off like no other, one of those bodies was my cousin. They count them like they were some sort of object, not realizing they are the most precious person in someone’s life back home.
"What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?" Mahatma Gandhi
oh i see two people liked my quote, thank you :D
by the way my favorite quote said was by George Romero, i was once a strong catholic too, until i started finding out their true Beliefs, but lets not get into detail i dont want to take up the whole page.
Nayeli: i understand you and i loved your quote ...its so raw, and i think you have every reason to be angry

Hey everyone
I really enjoyed listening to all the quotes in class. For those who stood up in the class to share their quotes...let me just say you did a good job!!!!! I know it wasn’t easy since a lot of us already know each other and you guys are new to the class.
Quote:
There's saints and sinners
Life’s a gamble and you might lose
There's cowards and heroes
Both have been known to break the rules
There's lovers and Haters
The strong and the weak will have their day
We're devils and angels
Which one will I be today?
Are you happy now with all the choices you've made?
Are there times in life when you know you should've stayed?
Will you compromise and realize the price is too much to pay?
Winners and losers, which one will you be today?
-Social Distortion
I believe that all the choices you make in life are important and we should make choices wisely but also live our life to our fullest. Life is filled with choices and opportunities. It’s up to you to make the decision that is not only going to change your day but shape your future. But this quote also points out how no one is perfect and how we all make mistakes and we live with them. We can choose to live out to the fullest or not but only you are able to decide how you want to live your life.
I love how people can take the same quote and interpret it differently. I guess it how you take the quote so in reality there is no right or wrong interpretations.
Nayeli I have a cousin who I lost in the war as well and I have another cousin still out there as well as friends. I know what you mean!!!! Another thing I love about this class is how we are all different yet so much a like!! By the end of this semester everyone will see how even though we may seem different or look different deep down we are all going through similar struggles and life dramas…
I just spent $140 for my speech book!!! Can you believe some of these prices for one book you are only to be using for a short amount of time!!!
Well I have a soccer game tomorrow so I’m outs!!
Goodnight everyone!!!

(I will post my quote and finish the blog assignment soon)
I would like to offer a former QHQ of mine.
I hope this helps a little as a guideline and to help some feel comfortable and open up to our new class.
I’ll Huff and I’ll Puff and I’ll Blow My Cave Down
My dad is my cave. My cave is escaping through drugs and alcohol. My dad refuses to own up to any wrong doings that he involves himself in. He was a horrible alcoholic when I was a child. He was diagnosed with Hepatitis C which put a damper on his drinking. He then turned to prescription drugs. He bought a drug dictionary which helped him study which drugs would help him get high. He would approach his doctor with his own self diagnoses. His doctor would prescribe him anything that he wanted. He has over dosed about 5 times now. Sometimes we would call 911 for him. Sometimes the fire department would show up at our door step because someone else would call. My dad would call random people to say his goodbyes and they would freak out and call the paramedics. My family is numb to it now; we aren’t fazed by it anymore. All of these favors that the doctor was doing for my dad was hurting my dad in the long run; since his liver filters anything he puts in his system. And his liver is sick. As I am an adult, a “friend” of his exposed him to cocaine. He sniffles constantly and blows coke boogers out of his nose all of the time. What a waste of money. My dad steals from my mom and I. He scurries through the dark hallways at 3 am like a rat would. He goes through our rooms when my mom and I go out and takes whatever he wants. He picks at his face until tissue is exposed. He is an embarrassment. “When he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities” – The Allegory of the Cave. This quote fits the future of my dad’s path. He is sheltered and excused from his actions by his family. The part that is the worst is that he is the baby in his family. His family is constantly making excuses for him and rescuing him when he is a damsel in distress. They don’t live with him so they don’t see the truth. And he doesn’t tell them the whole truth. They just go by what he says. The day will come when he finally hits bottom and realizes the damage he has caused. I have no respect for my dad or his family. Nor my dad or his family likes me. I know it’s because I am not naïve to his addictions, and that I am strong and opinionated. They constantly talk bad about me. But they don’t matter to me. Since becoming an adult and being able to make my own valuable decisions; I have escaped and freed myself from my cave by striving to be a good person. I have gone back to school. I am sober and have and will always be drug free. I am responsible. I am my terminally ill mother’s caregiver. I have set aside my life to make sure that my mom is always taken care of. I am honest to everyone I come across. More importantly I am honest to myself. I will never allow myself to stoop to my dad’s level. I will never allow myself to be anything like him.

Final Destination
"I cannot change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination." By: Jimmy Dean.
There is or going to be things in life that you are not going to be able to change only to put a solution. If you whant to get to your final destination (Goal) you would need to adjust to the things in life. Ex Where you work goes in fire you can loss the job. you will not be able to stop that but you can put a solution to it....If you become pregnant you can not change that any more, that should not have you stop to reach to your final destination or goal. The only thing you would have to adjust to your new life and it may be little harder but it would be worth it.
Hi!!!! evreyone i'm new to the systmen of blogging. Hopefully i'm in the right track......
Melissa Lopez i agree with you, i still can not believe i had expend around $400 in only two books. Just my accounting book cost me around $175 and my math book around $ 145. Like you said and only to used it for one semester.
Nutnaree Chanyavisudh I love your quote is really true, God gives us the starting and the ending of our life. We have to put what is in the meddle of our life. Either good or bad we are responsible of what we going to put in the middle of our life.

i have a few quotes that are my favorite for a number of reasons
#1) " I've suffered too much to hide my feelings" - Isabelle Adjani
i chose this quote because it relates to me, i have suffered so much in my life and before i used to hide it from everyone, i used to pretend i had a perfect life and it got to a point where i didn't even know who i was...i have been through so much and i've come to realize that my experiences and my pain are part of me and make me who i am...they are part of the reason i am the way i am. Bottling everything in is the worst thing to do because one day it all explodes and its the hardest thing. I have learned that my feelings are not something i should hide or be ashamed of.
Being in Mr. H class you will find that sooner or later you find out everyones story, sharing my story has brought me to make connections with others who give me support.
#2) " Nothing lasts forever, so live it up, drink it down, laugh it off, avoid the bullshit, take chances, and never have regrets, because at one point you realize that everything you did was exactly what you wanted.." - anonymous
I chose this quote because these are the guideline by which i live my life. I dont hold grudges i dont dwell on the past, or what i should have done because life is too short. its not worth it to stay angry all the time it only holds you back, life is hard, in my life everything that can possibly go wrong does so the only thing i can do is not take it too seriously... get ready for the next day, life goes on and crybabies are annoying!!
#3)"No matter what, keep your head up gorgeous....people would kill to see you fall" - Marilyn Monroe
i love this quote..to me its saying don't let other people bring you down or hold you back. don't get hung up on what other people think, theres ALWAYS going to be somebody trying to step over you, someones always going to talk ummm trash ...who cares let them, live your life to the fullest, and no matter what happens never lose your pride. other people can try and bring you down but never let them succeed, never put down yourself.
Be yourself, live your life and make as many people jealous of you as you can...the more the better hahahaha
if there is one quote that stood out to me the most it would have to be amadors stateing "master yourself, or be enslaved by others." which is a small but universal quote that many should take into consideration by those who feel lost or in need of meaning in life.

well, we're back! " For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."-Audrey Hepburn
For me this quote me that to be truly thought and looked at as a BEAUTIFUL PERSON you have to seek the good in everyone and only speak of positive things instead of always being negative and thinking like a failure and that no matter what even when you think your alone their will always be someone to help you throguh your situation no matter how big or small the situation.

My quote (it's super long so i picked my favorite part of it), by Ayn Rand from her novel, Atlas Shrugged:
"Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it's yours.”
I suppose there are many ways to interpret this. I feel like this quote challenges me to find that greatness that lives inside each and every one of us, in me. It reminds me that I can’t let my fears discourage me from going after what I want and living the life that I’m capable of.
Talia, I love all your quotes, especially the first one. I can really relate to that one. Our feelings are important, they MATTER, and they are nothing to be embarrassed of because they help define us as being human.

Hey guys!
I’m a newcomer, and to be quite honest I’m beyond intimidated by this class.. not only because its unlike any other class I’ve taken here at CC, but also because writing is probably one of my worst fears.. it always has been. Whenever I’m given any writing assignment I literally freak out. I have a difficult time putting my thoughts onto paper and simply expressing myself in a profound, flowing way. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this class will broaden my horizons and change my attitude towards writing.. making me more eager to write rather than avoiding it at all costs. To all the former students who have blogged- thanks for making us, the new kids on the block, feel very welcomed! =)

[quote/thoughts]
Well my quote is pretty simple. Its from my favorite book, The Perks Of Being A Wallflower:
"Even if we dont have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there"
Im sure many can relate and appreciate this quote as much as I do.
There is no excuse for failure or self pity. we all have the power to build our future
As for my first impression of class, well Im pretty hesitant to speak up but I am almost positive I will loosen up soon and participate. Trust me, you all will remember me....but in a good way I hope..haha
To Sarika,
I love your quote, I almost picked an Ayn Rand quote too, but from The Fountainhead. The quote really inspires the reader to never give up and to uphold that fire that is inside all of us. Truly inspirational.

quote: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It's not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
-Nelson Mandela
i actually liked everyones quote. they were all great in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteA child who grows up with a difficult situation, they did not choose to have that life but they can go two ways, either they can follow in the steps of their family, become what their family or is, like a child who was beaten and grows to abuse their own children, or a child who grew up around drugs and becomes a user himself....OR they can go against what they grew up around and better themself, get an education, be a good parent, stay drug free their entire life...i've seen it happen both ways and i guess one never knows....i dont know is it ones will power or do they really not have a choice??

My Quote
"Beauty comes from inside and out, but true beauty comes from within." -Vanessa Minillo
First off, I LOVE this quote! Unfortunately, we live in a society that we solely judge on physical appearance, when in reality their true beauty is how they are as a person. We have teenage girls that look up to these so called beautiful celebrities, when they are ugly inside. Take Naomi Cambell (not sure of last name spelling)for instance, the worlds first African American model. Naomi is being admired by many young aspiring models, but she is genuinely ugly inside. She treats her entourage like if they are for lack of a better word, slaves. She mistreats them, throws stuff at them and has complete disregard of their feelings. I feel that genuine beauty should be defined as how a person really is AS A PERSON, NOT FOR WHAT THEY PHYSICALLY LOOK LIKE!
(Brenda's two cents) lol
I really like talia's quote!
" I'VE SUFFERED TOO MUCH TO HIDE MY FEELINGS."
I guess i really like this quote because it applies to how i am as a person. If you had last semester with Hsiao you know what i am talking about!! lol i just do not and would never sugar coat ANYTHING! I tell it like it is...My model: Never ask me anything you do not want an honest answer to.

The Creation of the Mind's Environment
“Our world view is not simply the way we look at the world. It reaches inward to constitute our innermost being, and outward to constitute the world. It mirrors but also reinforces and even forges the structures, armoring, and possibilities of our interior life. It deeply configures our psychic and somatic experience, the patterns of our sensing, knowing, and interacting with the world. No less potently, our world view-our beliefs and theories, our maps, our metaphors, our myths, our interpretive assumptions-constellates our outer reality, shaping and working the world’s malleable potential in a thousand ways of subtly reciprocal interaction. World views create worlds." -Richard Tarnas, Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View

ReplyDeleteA group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: "For Women Only." Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in. The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. "We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It's easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what's inside." So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: "All the men on this floor are short and plain." The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor. The sign on the second floor reads: "All the men here are short and handsome." Still, this isn't good enough, so the friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: "All the men here are tall and plain." They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up. On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: "All the men here are tall and handsome." The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor. There they find a sign that reads: "There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman".

Wow. Thats so very true in many ways. Its also very funny. I dont care what other girls say, this joke is very true. Girls like a guy to be a challenge and if we were to find a guy to fit everything that we could possibly want in every way then we'd get bored. Girls like to feel like they serve a purpose...kind of like a mom. What would a mom do if she wasnt telling you to clean your room?
If a guy were perfect, we'd have no challenge left.
Im sure theres more to this theory though.
but good job on sharing that joke.

Hello! Well, to start this off I am a new student to Cerritos College. It is my second semester and so far it has been enjoyable. Though entering John Hsiao's English 52 class and seeing his pet peeves I thought this was going to be a strict class, but so far it seems not so. I took this class to challange my skills in terms of studying when the class is not so relaxed and kick back and I hope after taking this class I will be a better student.

Beauty from within & Doughboy joke
I really like Brenda's quote about how true beauty comes from within...and you are totally right! sadly, in this world today people judge mostly by physical appearance. The joke about the hotel and four women is funny and just goes to show you how people again look to the physical aspects of things. not one of those definitions about the men on the floor had to do with character or integrity...rather it was short, tall, plain, handsome...

Oh ha ha. I posted a blog on MY own space. my bad >___< ....
Hi everyone, as you can tell, my name is Sarah. This is my first year with this teacher and first time ever really doing anything like this (Xanga doesn't count!). I'm really hoping to make some new friends in this class because i'm quite the chatterbox when it comes down to it. Anyway, I suppose if you want to get to know me better you can just read my page(:
Oh, btw, me being a total noob about this stuff help navigating around this thing would be a BIG help(:
Anyway, my favorite quote that I brought into class was this: "Speak without offending and listen without defending." _Anonymous
This quote just really stands out to me because if we all followed this rule, a LOT of anger could be avoided. I try to apply this to my life as much as possible, but sometimes... it just doesn't work out too well(:
As for Brenda's quote by Vanessa Minillo, I couldn't help but agree more. I have to admit i'm quite disgusted by how our nation portrays 'beautiful' women. i'm even more disgusted by people that encourage others to starve themselves to get to their desired body weight. I know that if I say anything more this post will turn into a long rant.

To be honest the first day of class i was little bit suprised i would say, because i seriously thought it was some high school reunion [its not something bad..lol] or a career specific class, because everyone knew each other....i really felt out of the loop, but i liked the atmosphere, how everyone knew each other, rather than any other class, where people come in, just on their ipods til the prof comes and leave right after their done!
anywayz I see this class as a challenge, Public Speaking is NOT something i enjoy so seeing that theres a lot of this in the class, hopefully ill get over it! and make new friends at the same time!

My quote:
"To be satisfied with a little is the greatest wisdom, and he that increaseth his riches, increaseth his cares, but a contented mind is a hidden treasure, and trouble findeth it not." - Akhenaton
When I read this quote it reminded me of friends and family that I have. Almost all of them had trouble with the law because of the lifestyle they chose. Most people just want money and power like somebody that I know that is very close to me. His greediness eventually lead him into prison just because he wasn't satisfied with what he already had. He was actually living a very good life, but I guess it just wasn't enough for him.
One quote that I really liked was Eduardo's quote, I think that was his name, because it actually makes me want to try harder each and every time on anything that I try to accomplish. Sort of like overachieve instead of settling for less.

I agree because everyone can relate to the quote about filling in the middle of the story. We all have the ability to create our story the way we desire. Yes there can be obstacles but we still have choices. It is just how we choose to follow our paths.
Well now is my turn to share my quote:

This is not the quote I chose for my assignment, but it a favorite of mine.
"Children will not remember you for the material things you provided but for the feeling that you cherished them."
Richard L. Evans
My dad was not emtionally present as my brother and I grew up. He did not lead by example and did not raise us like most parents are able to. He has always lashed out at us, and in order to make amends he would buy us things. He would then turn around and get angry if we would give them away, sell them, or just simply disregard them. To us, the gifts were just things. They did not mean anything when they were an excuse not to communicate and apologize.
Lorena: I like your quote. Everyone should live life with no regrets. Mistakes will be made and lessons will be learned.

Anyways...my quote is...
"Be who you are, and say what you feel, because those who mind dont matter, and those who matter dont mind!" -Dr. Seuss-
I love this quote because it is totally how i feel about life. No one should keep their feelings bottled up inside. There is a time, a place, and a way to share your feelings, but you have to tell people the truth. The people who love you are going to continue loving you no matter what you say, and those who get mad about your opinion really never matter anyways, or at least they shouldn't have.
Danielle i really like your quote! It really is so true. The most important thing in life is knowing someone cares about you, and loves you. If someone has that, then material things really never matter!

Title: The Man in the Glass
when you get what you want in the struggle for self. and the world makes you king for a day. just go to the mirror and look at yourself and see what that man has to say. for it isnt your fater, mother or wife whose judgment upon you must pass. the fellows whose verdict counts the most in your life is the one staring back from the glass. you may be like Jack Horner, and chisel a plum, and think youre a wonderful guy. but the man in the glass says youe only a bum, if you cant look him straight in the eye. hes the fellow to please, never mind all the rest, for hes with you clear to the end, and your past your most dangerous, difficult test, if the man in the glass is your friend. you may fool the world down the pathway of years, and get pats on your back as you pass. but your final reward will be heartache and tears, if youve cheated the man in the glass.

Ok so my quote is the following....
"A Successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him." -Unknown-
Well I chose this quote beacuse it mostly happens to everyone. When someone tries to succeed in life, try to accomplish goals, or to not settle for less there's always going to be people that are going to stand in your way. The people that can't stand seeing you better yourself, are going say anything to bring you down, and well instead of letting them get to your head, its better to get of all their comments and use it as an impulse to reahc out even further!
The one quote that I really liked was Alyssa's. The way she said it in class, and how that quote reminded her of her uncle, made me remember that quote a lot! Also i like it alot for what it stands.

After reading Cathedral I am left with a few questions. Mainly what was the point of drawing the cathedral for the blind man? I understand the plot the setting and the story line but it does not make sence. I am guessing it has to do with the same meaning of Allegory of the Cave. Where in Allegory of the cave Plato talks about humanity in general. People live in their seperate worlds chosing to belive what is said to them without question. However, once taken out of the cave one is free to explore reality. One is no longer told was to believe and what is true, but one is free to experience everything life has to offer. I think there is a connection with Cathedral, in the sence of there is someones "cave". In the story Cathedral the main character, the husband, lives in his cave. The blind man, Robert, is the sun. I think? Where the husband is content living his own life not interested in the blind man. It seems that the husband belives that Robert is missing out in life becuase he is blind. Where it turns out to be the opposite. In the end of the story when the husband helps Robert draw the Cathedral it seems that the person who experinces the most is the husband. After they draw the cathedral the husband says, "It was like nothing else in my life up to now" (Paragraph 32). It seems that the husbands perception of the blind man has changed. Like the person in Allegory of the Cave after they surface the cave. Well... I think it is something along thise lines.
Alonso,
ReplyDeleteYou are the first one to post the assignment for Allegory of the Cave and Cathedral. You are spot on in your interpretation. That is a great quote you chose in terms of ending line is it not? Yes, the perception of the blind man to the husband has definitely changed, and it is ironic, right? The ignorance and stereotyping, the intolerance, if you will is blown away and nothing but the cathedral drawing and the act of the blind man in showing him that the husband can "see" to, but in a wholly different way. Excellent. What do the others think?
I will post the questions of the QHQ in a bit.
Good work, Alonso!

I have had people in my life but they leave because they are not meant to be with me all my life just for a while. Once again, i love the quote.

The Allegory of the Cave
This story is about someone out there that unfortunately could not handle problems that they're keep getting in real life, so they're making their own cave as their escape gate away. One of the example for the cave could be drugs or alcohol which is not the best answer for clearing all problems out. I think the thesis for this passage, is we need the conquered our cave(real life) and accepted the truth. After we accepted the fact and live our life to the fullest every each day, we could be the best person as we could possibly be.

The Allegory of the Cave
This story has so many definitions. The one that sticks out to me the most is that everyone creats their own cave. A cave is something you have to over come, a problem that has been to hard for one to face. When the man in the story sees the sun, he turns to run, and that is what so many people do. It isnt that we dont want to face our problems, but it is that we dont know how. When someone is shown somthing for his whole life, then how hard would it be to believe another way of life?

The Definition of Love
LOVE: We think about it, Sing about it, Dream about it && Loose sleep worrying about it. When we don't know we have it, we search for it. When we discover it, we don't know what to do with it. When we have it, we fear losing it. It is the constant source of pleasure and pain. But we don't know which it will be from one moment to the next. It is a short word, easy to spell, difficult to define && IMPOSSIBLE to live without. By Unknown

The Living Situation
The reason I have not been on here very much is due to my changing life. This month I gave up the apartment, and me and Araceli went our separate ways. It has been hard, I can not deny that. But I can get through this, with time and acceptance. :[
Now I am staying at my grandma's house. Trying to forget day by day, I keep myself
busy;limited sleep, limited nutrition.
Well I am ordering internet for my location, so give me time Mr.Hsiao and I will be on here like a fox.
May you all enjoy your weekend. It is going to be a rainy one, my favorite weather.

I love you SOLOPAN! lol =]
Well i too dont have access to the internet the way i would like to. but im going to be getting internet on my phone so i can go on this thing and get my well earned grade.
Well i love the story of Allegory and the cave. and even though i had read it in the previous semester with mr. H i still had a tough time reading it.
:ALLEGORY & THE CAVE:
My understanding of allegory and the cave is begin trapped. To see the light, know whats right and still do wrong. This story explains me. i have a new cave... my cave is ecstasy. i am trapped in la la land and i dont want to leave. i see the light, i know its there, i hear my parents and friends but i dare not turn around. I'm not hurting only myself im hurting my family and my friends. and even though ecstasy is a drug, when i talk about it i see it as a cigarette. i know it will hurt me and kill me slowly but i still want it in my life. the pain i caused my parents is unbearable. i see their pain, i feel their pain, i know im wrong ... but i still dont stop. it sucks to admit that im wrong, and that i am addicted ... but i am. i dont want to leave the drug alone. its gotten to the point that im chained up by it. Just like the chains are on the prisoners in allegory in the cave, my chain wont let me go. the feeling i get when i am on it is unexplainable....
whew that took alot out of me. ...
um i hope nobody is offended by what i just said and i hope none of my classmates judge me.
well its friday and im so glad i can finally sleep in! i usually wake up at 6 for work. but the weekend helps.

These past few weeks have been real shitty to say the most. I feel like I'm in a dream. Right now things are not making any sense. To tell you the truth people, i have no idea what my cave is. i have so many of them i don't know what to choose. maybe I'm in my cave right now. With the economy and shit doing bad and only getting worse. i don't want this, my parent who gave me everything are now looking to me. Like im supporting them now, but i have to they gave me life.
I always had things running through my mind that were going to lead to this. I always had a feeling that this was gonna happen. i know i may not be seen as the sharpest tool in the shed in class but It sure feels like it when certain people just don't shut the fuck up and instantly walk over me and don't respect my opinion. I am trying to chisel out my brain so i can actually put in words on what is on my mind. for me this is not something new as i expected all this to already happen.

Your cave can be more specific (You knew I was going to say that): "My cave is being taken care of for most of my life, but now I am concerned that I cannot take care and return the favor to those that helped me, my parents and family."
The ALLEGORY OF THE CAVE Is about one being told what to think, feel, know. Like people these days. everyone reads the news, listens to the gossip about stars while the world is happening around them. the man looking into the sun resembles seeing the truth, insted of reading the news, one can go out and live life. not let other people tell you what to pelieve. because in the end, what they are telling you is there opinion and just what they could find. the world is big (believe it or not) one should go out and find there own news.

The Cathedral
What caught my attention the most while reading CATHEDRAL, was the change of character in the husband. In the beginning, it was as if he had already "made up his mind" about the blind man and was not looking forward to meet him. Judging the blind man before he had even met him, the husband made these "predictions" about blind people based on what he saw in "the movies" (Cathedral, first paragraph). While reading it, i felt kind of awkward for the husband when he and the blind man were sitting watching tv. However, i think that that "awkwardness" was a key component of his change of character. In the end, the blind man helped open the husband's eyes to a whole new world he had never experienced before. Like the husband, we all are faced with trials that help shape and mold who we are as a person...i think as long as we are open minded, these trials will broaden our perspective of life and other people.
Brian,
ReplyDeleteGood interpretation of CATHEDRAL. Exactly, we can only hope to see the way the husband "sees" after the blind man leads him to do so, right?
The awkwardness is an interesting take on it because if one gets out of one's comfort zone there is, indeed awkwardness. Yes
There is a definitive change that sparks the husband to become, perhaps, a different person. Too bad, the story ends there however.
First post solely on CATHEDRAL and a good analysis of character and relation to the human condition.
What else?

The Allegory of the Cave
Based on what I have read, Allegory of the Cave is a story by Socrates and explains the irony of life. The cave represents an entrapment which prisoners are chained by the neck since childhood. Without the ability to move, their eyes adjusted forever in the darkness, they see shadows amongst them. As curious can be, they conversate with another as they do not know who they are conversating with. As a prisoner finds himself out of the cave, he is spited with light. Painful rays of light shine upon is pupil and shadows become fuzzy images, and those images into fixations of unknown objects, then finally the truth. As he gathers the information in with his new eyes retain, he ponders on his previous suituation and pitys his former life and friends. The unenlightened and becomes the enlightened. Allegory of the Cave is the ascension of darkness, poor, death-like circumtances to bright light, rich folk, and a life none of the people have ever seen, dreamnt, or thought about.

Cathedral By Raymond Carver
First thought: the wife's husband is a jerk!...
Second Thought; "Smoke some dope with me" WTH!
I personally liked the story. It was funny, but the husband in the beginning got on my nerves! This story, from what i took from it, is pretty much asking us not to under estimate anyone, especially a blind person. They are still human. They breathe the same air, like the same things as those of us who do not have a dissability. To be their for someone when in need, will mean the worldto them. The husband in the beginning of the story seemed straight ignorant. As i continued to read, i believe that he had a better understanding of the blind man and his situation. Do not judge a book by the cover type of thing.
The Allegory of the Cave By Plato
The majority of people choose to live in the dark. This might be mainly because of fear. When they finally realize their cave and are able to share it with others, or just accept it within themselves, they will see the light in a sense, and notice that everything will be okay! Personally i have a cave. I have shared it with last semesters students, so i will share it with you all. When i was younger i was sexually abused by my uncle. Still to this day, i keep it a secret! My family, my mom, nobody knew until, well now and last semester! i will EVENTUALLY let it out to my family....hopefully sooner than later!

Cathedral
In my opinion, Cathedral is a simple story with the underlying theme of sight and perception. It is about a man who can see, literally, but is blind to the world around him. Ironically, it takes an actual blind man to teach him how to “see”. In the beginning of the story the husband was quite narrow minded. He was satisfied with his own life and did not have a care for the blind man, Robert. He took no interest in him because by judgment, he believed Robert couldn’t possibly be truly experiencing life due to his blindness. But this wasn’t the case. The simple task of drawing a cathedral with the blind man brought about a spark of clarity. It wasn’t until Robert had told the husband to close his eyes and finish drawing that for the first time, the husband had felt liberated from his own mindset. By the end of the story we knew that for a moment, his perception had changed. He was able to open up his mind to a completely different world than the one he had been living in. This gives us, the readers, hope that changing our mentalities is not impossible. It boils down to how we choose to perceive things, people, or situations. Sometimes all it takes is opening our minds and hearts and using them in place of our eyes, as our guides… and “seeing” beyond what is right in front of us.
__
The Allegory of the Cave is kind of difficult to understand because its more in-depth… but I’m seeing how it’s very similar to Cathedral. Hmmmm.

I have read Cathedral by Raymond Carver. This story is about how sight is sometimes the disability over a blind person’s ability to utilize one’s imagination. While reading Cathedral, I realized how little attention I pay to important details that enhance the beauty the world has to offer. Bub took sight for granted and Robert was able to help him utilize his vision. Robert probably saw his wife with more intimately than Bub saw his own wife. With watching the program about the Cathedrals, Bub scanned over the pictures on the screen. He was forced to go back and remember the details of the structure to recreate it on paper for Robert. Professor Hsiao opened my eyes on how to structure a sentence with last semester’s class. When writing, I try to visualize the sentence I am writing down. If I cannot picture what is going on, the sentence is probably a fragment or run-on.

The Allegory of the Cave is about the entrapment of people since their childhood. They are in a cave and have never seen outside that darkhole. They are chained from their neck as if they were dogs. It talks about how they need to adjust to the reality of the out side world. They will only see the darkness of where they have been , but it is better than being someone's property. It states that everyone has to eventually open their eyes and see the reality.

Cathedral
At the beginning of the story,I think that the husband is kind of rude to look at the blind man in a bad way, even before they have met.Later on in the story, I don't really like the scene where the blind man,the husband and the wife are sitting down and smoke weed.I think that it set a bad example for the reader.Near the end of the story, there is a scene, where the blind man help teach the husband to draw cathedral and later told him to close his eyes and finished drawing it.For this scene,I think it is unique because the blind man change the husband's perspective of how he see the world in a new way.The husband is now no longer "blind" because he finally sees that the blind man is a person with the same thoughts and emotions as himself.Overall,I can understand this story a lot better than "The Allegory of the Cave."As for "The Allegory of the Cave",I don't understand anything in the story at all.It is very hard to understand and it was a hard reading.

Cathedral and Wiping Off Prejudice
Raymond Carver demonstrates in Cathedral how one man awakens to witness truth from a man that he least likely expects to befriend. Robert, a man who has come to visit his wife's relatives house and was planning on staying with his old friend and her husband. The husband judges Robert as a blind man rather than the man he is. He has this train of thought in his mind about how Robert's life is pathetic because he is blind. Later on, after a good toke from some cannabis, Robert and "Bub" (so Robert calls him) converse and watch television. A program representing cathedrals was on. Bub questioned Robert's perception of what a cathedral was. Bub was trying to explain and paint in Robert's mind what a cathedral was. In the end, he wasn't able to do an adequate job with describing to Robert about the cathedral. The bond that brings them together is when Robert asks Bub to follow his hand as he draws the cathedral. At the finish of the drawing, they are both able to comprehend who they were. Bub, with the guiding wonders of Robert, was able to understand how his ignorance has coated his judgment on Robert. He realizes that Robert is an empathetic, easygoing man that just happens to be blind. He finds and fixes his eyes to see that it is not the disability that handicaps the person; it is prejudice and apathy that handicaps and destroys a person.

Allegory of the Cave
This parable is pretty much saying that one that is imprisoned by there cave (i.e. drugs, alchohol, family issues, etc.) cannot see the light till they overcome them or confront them. Mr. Hsiao made us talk about our cave last semester and we really got to understand what this story really meant. it made us talk about and write about our supressed feelings and thoughts. When one finally realizes what they havnt been able to confront or move on from, they realize how good it feels and what they've been missing out on.

Well for one I didn’t like Allegory of the cave by Plato because besides being confusing I thought it was meaningless. On the other hand Cathedral by Raymond Carver was an interesting story. I think it was funny because of the irony of a blind man that could see better than a man who can actually see. It was also funny that these two men just out of nowhere start smoking weed. I think this story was entertaining.

Cathedra
In the beginning of the story, the husband does not know anything about blind people. He even says that he expected the blind man to have a cane and sun glasses on. And when the blind man came to stay with him and his wife, he did not know what to do or what to say to the blind man. The husband asked questions that he thought was offensive. But after they ate dinnder they both warmed up to each other and bonded together by smoking weed. I thought this was a great way to show that not only are blind people just like everyone else, but they even do the same things that everyone else does. At the end of the story the blind man changes the husbands perspective about blind people by showing that they can do everything a normal person, just in a different way.

Allegory of the Cave
So after reading this over and over, I finally got it. People are imprisoned in a cave and do not know what reality is until they see the sun. They are tricked to believe what they grown to see in the media and advertisement. For instance when a consumer purchases a product, and expects something different from what they actually get. There are always online reviews about the product that is being sold which persuades the consumer to purchase the product. Sometimes the online reviews are bias don't tend to believe what you see or read, because it is better to experience it first hand.
This is how I see it...

[Allegory of the cave]
I very much enjoyed reading this. Although I am not positive if my interpretation of this story is correct, I'll try to take a stab at it.
The image of the cave, in my opinion, represents something that we all keep inside of us. Like an issue that stays inside of us that tugs away at us and prevents us from the light (knowledge). This issue or cave can be any obstacle. Like the people in the story, they sit with there necks and legs chained so that they cannot move or turn their heads as they watch these shadows, and all they know are the shadows. These people do not know anything but the shadows. This represents how we as people are chained to these obstacles in our lives and dont know any better because all we know are the errors that we continue to make. It is when we break free from those chains and get up and look around, that we really start to understand and gain knowledge, we become enlightened and never think of going back. Plato says "if he is compelled to look straight at the light, will he not have a pain in his eyes which will make him turn away to take and take in the objects of vision which he can see, and which he will conceive to be in reality clearer than the things which are now being shown to him?"I believe here he is saying that at first it would be painful to see the light once someone actually makes the effort but then the prisoner will then start to see things more clearly and start embracing knowledge and reality.
Furthermore, Plato goes on to ask if the prisoner would go back to his original line of thinking once he saw the light and reality, and of course he wouldnt, like Plato says, he would pity them, Just like we would not turn back to the darkness once we saw the light, we would pity those who are still in the dark and who are still chained down in the darkness, knowing nothing but shadows and nothing of reality. In other words, being prisoners of their obstacles and not knowing any better than to continue the path they are on.
I saw a little connection with the two stories as well.
They both seem to talk about being uneducated about something and then gaining knowledge. In Cathedral, the husband knows nothing about the blind man and feels uncomfortable with the whole situation. The only thing he knows about blind people are what he sees on TV, which could connect to the prisoners of the cave who know nothing but the shadows they see. Then the husband begins to understand the blind man and bonds with him and then ultimately has a deep connection with him when closing his eyes and drawing with him. I suppose Plato would say he was "enlightened".
okay now i feel like im rambling, so ill stop.

well I read the story The Allegory of the Cave was a very confusing story, but after reading it more then twice. The menssege of the story came to me On verse or number 15. What Plato try to say was that every one needed or is able. Think out side the box to think beyond the obious. then the story goes on to say that if every one was able to think more then what you see at plane view. All the questions you have will be answer by the knowledge you gain from thinking out side the box.

Alligory of the cave
The way I see it is that the prisoners are ordinary people of whon have a knolegde of small fragmented truths. These small truths(shadows) are taken from the larger truth(the fire) and used to build a large deception. Many people prefer the lie simply because its easyer to deal with(Approching the fire and being burned).Only those who seek the truth will even begin to accept in as appose to those who are compelled by accedent or intentionally. However, even if one desires the truth, one must first have a foundation to support the truth(somewhat like what Socrates does with Glaucon in the story). If one were to try to go straight form the darkness to light would have a crude understanding of the message. Finally, if one had a clear understanding of the the truth, one would easily abandon one's old ideals and adopt a new way to think and act. This new etiquette will remaine embraced solely on the illusion of rationality. This is defined as foolishness.
In other words...
There is no such thing as an absolute truth.

In the article The Main Ingredient, Dreddy Kruger states, “…you don't know until you know. To me, it's always better to make a decision and then realize that that wasn't the right decision than to never make a decision and always wonder 'what if (6).”
Making a decision is the easiest thing to do, and the same time the hardest. Deciding to be safe is always easy, but deciding the scary side is what people fear the most. Maybe you might meet the person of your dreams, or maybe you might win the lottery. It is sometimes best to take chances because you never know until you know.

In Cathedral, I believe there is a lesson to be learned. In the beginning of the story, the husband had already formed his thoughts on the blind man, and was not going to go out of his way to befriend Robert, the blind man. By forming such an early opinion of Robert, the husband's eyes are "closed" to the possibility that a blind man can be just as normal as any other man. In the middle of the story, the husband and Robert end up getting high together and watching a show about cathedrals. Through them talking about cathedrals, the husband is forced to try and communicate more with Robert, which leads to the husband "opening" his eyes. If they had not first gotten high, would the husband have been so willing to talk with Robert about something Robert had never seen, and knew nothing of? Through the husband's efforts to describe cathedrals to Robert, Robert then comes up with a unique idea. Robert has the husband draw him a cathedral, which I believe is the lesson. By drawing the cathedral, the husband's eyes are "opened" to the reality that everyone can "see" things in their own way, you just have to be accepting of a person and be open to new experiences. No one should pass judgment on a person before meeting them first.
This story really caught my attention. The husband in the story is the one who could see and Robert is the blind man but in reality the husband is blinded by his ignorance. Knowing nothing about Robert the husband judges on not only the fact that he is blind but Roberts “colored” wife and his appearance[[beard]]. He was also blind to his wife.. He becomes somewhat jealous of the relationship between Robert and his wife “waited in vain to hear my name…” The husband does not realize that Robert has been there to actually listen to the wife even though they were apart. Mean well he was always with her he never kept interest into his own wife’s feelings or “poems” he simply brushed them off. He commented about how Robert could love a woman he had never seen . Even though he could physically see his wife he could not “see” her feeling like Robert could. After the wife leaves the two alone they begin to watch TV and also smoke some marijuana. They begin watching a TV program of cathedrals. later the husband is attempts to describe the cathedral to Robert but he lacks the usage or words. So instead the Robert asks him to draw it for him as he follows with his hand. Communicating without using words then Robert asks the husband to close his eyes as he is drawing. By doing this Robert showed the husband what it is like to have no sight. Giving the husband the opportunity to see in a different perspective. Stepping out of his shadow or ignorance in which he had been in. the husbands eyes are "opened" for the very first time...
ReplyDeleteThe Allegory or the Cave
This story is really hard to read. But once one gets the message it is easier to follow. The cave is what stops us from seeing the reality in life. Most of our own personal caves are different whether it is drugs, alcohol, family, friends, physical/mental abuse etc…. but we can escape our cave or the obstacles that hold us back. And when we do we can see life in a different perspective or a different light. Once we overcome or are freed from the cave we can fully live life.
This story relates to allegory in the cave in a way.
The husband wasn’t there for his wife emotionally and if you notice through out the story he is always fixing himself a drink and even smokes weed. Alcohol and weed is his cave. He mentions that him in his wife never go to bed at the same time. Instead he stays up as late as he could and smokes dope. The husband uses alcohol and weed to escape from reality and to get his high. Opposed to Robert who enjoys valuable time with his wife. Seeing that spending time with the people one loves is worth more than anything a drug or drink can give one. Drugs is his cave and Robert is the light. (truth/reality)

Ok so after reading Cathedral first thing I noticed was how judgmental the husband was. He seemed to have a sarcastic humor that was sort of rude. To me this story is ironic because i guess you can say that the husband was truly the blind person until the blind guy came into the husbands life to show him how to view things in a different perspective.

Well to be honest I was falling asleep reading The Allegory of the Cave at first time. It took me couple times to finish reading it. I actually like the other reading the Cathedral it was much interesting. In a way we can all relate because it about being in our comfort zone that we are afraid to view life in a different perspective. We are trap in a world that we are conditioned to criticize and not see beyond. Just like the story he assumed that the blind people were slow and never laugh. Why? Because he had seen it in movies as I said conditioned. When he was drawing he had no idea what he was doing but he gave it a try. Ironically it is to know that the blind man was able to see better then the husband. In a way it is telling us to not just assume and go by what is shown or said. It is to try something new and it maybe it will be an eye opener. It will give us a new perspective in life and not be afraid. That is what I understood like everyone has their own interpretation.
Well I had a busy weekend working and I am just tired. See you guys tomorrow.

[Allegory of the Cave]
Allegory was mainly about how people are taught to believe things, not knowing if they are true ornot, unless they seek the truth outside of the world they know. It is almost like how people decide between what is right/good and wrong/bad. They will never know what is right unless they try it and will never know the wrong way unless they fail. This is proven in paragraph 1 and 15.. P. 1."Underground den" was a symbol of being trapped in your beliefs and the only way to be open about things is to see them for yourself and not just go by word of mouth from other people. P. 15. "He will suffer sharp pains[...]his eye is turned towards a more real existnece, was describing how if you look outside the world you know you will never know what there is to discover.

My weekend
My soccer game went good we won!!
Yay
Friday I came to riverside
and decided to go out even though I knew I had to be up at 5 the next morning but hey we are only young once!
I went to sleep at 330 got up and got up at 5 to get ready to take my father and aunt to TJ.
Recently, my fahter found out that my grandpa is getting sick and is believed to be in the beginning stages of alzheimer. So my father and aunt decided to go for two weeks to take him to the doctors.
So we arrive at Tj and my uncle is driving with my father sitting passenger and my aunt, cousin, and I back seat of my cousins Scion 08
As soon as we cross over we get pulled over and are asked to setp out
They threw everything out of the suitcases and checked the entire car Seats roof glove department I mean everything!
So they find nothing and let us put the things back in and leave.
Not even ten mins later we are pulled over by some cops who claim we didnt make a stop and even though we did and swore we did the made up a stupid excuses that all four tires were not stop... So they ask my uncle for his license and start to write out a ticket. Then the other officer asked where we were headed and my uncle replied "the airport" then he says the ticket is going to be 80 bucks but that he would have to take my uncle in right now to pay the ticket which would take hours (complete bs) so he tells us that he wouldn't take us in if we gave him 80 dollars personally but he wanted it in an envelope...
((jerks))
So whatevers my dad worked it down to 45 but still makes me mad..
So drop off my dad and aunt and my cousin starts driving back and I sit passenger well my uncles knocks out back seat. Then again we are pulled over by another set of cops but these guys have thier faces covered. They ask us to step out but make my uncle stay in the back seat. We are asked to move our sweaters and to lean againts thier car as they "searched us" which was more like invade our private personal space. It was horrible and after they got thier feel they dare to ask for money..
We didnt pay them but they let us go without anything else...
One word! ***holes...
((Sorry))
other than that it was pretty good...

When i had first started to read it i thought it would be boring but is was not. It was about the husband not being comfortable with people that are disabled. By watching movies that describe how they act. That when he spends time with the blind man. That the blind man is just regular but can not see. That he had to step out of is comfort zone and make en effort to see that.

I want to talk about two things if anyone is willing to listen the first is the required reading.
And Now I said let e show in a figure how far our nature is enlighten or unenlightened:-- Behold! Human beings living in an underground den ,which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the Den; here they have been from their childhood. , And have their legs and necks chained so that they cannot move, and can only see before them, being prevented by the chains from turning round their heads. Above and behind them a fire blazing at a distance and between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way and you will see, if you look a low wall built along the way , Like the Screen which marionettes players have in front of them, over which they show the puppets.
In this first paragraph Socrates is starting to explain the "prison" . Everything is explained to Glaucon. This "prison" is the only reality that the prisoners know and have been their since childhood. If we compare to are lives we begin to show how Socrates is showing us How life works. We are often shown false things and these things we "believe" in are false. We are prisoners trained to believe since Childhood in things. The Allegory goes on to explain that despite the pain we feel we must see the Truth. We must not entertain false notions. Now that I believe in Subjective Truth what is my Truth to be in not the same others. Though the difference between Falsehood and Truth personal or not is whether one has fought for it not. We often are trained to accept the falsities of the shadows on the wall. It is are duty to see the light and understand what Truth is and what it is not.ACCEPT NOT THE FALSITY THE SHADOWS BUT THE
JOURNEY OF YOUR TRUTH! (Caps mean business.)
My weekend and weirdness
If anyone doesn't know I should come out of the broom closet. I am practicing neo-pagan I am Hellenic in nature.Hellenic mean Greek which means I pray and have rituals in the name of the Greek Gods. I also practice Magic(k) which is my own system. No I am not(double negative?) Wiccan though I know some wiccans. Moving forward even though I am Hellenic pagan many of fellow pagans call me wizard. I have to say at times it can be weird but I respect the title. This weekend I came up and did a ritual for my friends Girlfriend. It surprises me how much I know and how well I am able to adapt to different pagan systems of faith. It just weirds me out sometimes. Is that strange?

I've got a few interpretations and contexts for this one considering my personal beliefs and my desire of exploring all avenues, but we'll see how far I decide to go as I write. Ir probably won't be far and it probably won't have much structure to it, but I'm quite worn out from the weekend and it's late.
Allegory of the Cave
There is far more to be seen that what we can actually see.
I'd like to give a modern illustration to Plato's writing: Some of us are raised in families, typically immigrant, that are uneducated and have certain views on life and reason. This is the cave that we live in; we are the prisoners. We're taught things growing up with familiar terminology such as what is right and wrong, but as we grow older and perhaps advance in our education and/or life experience we begin to leave the cave and come to find that such definitions are proving false. We also may find the true objects of love, happiness, or propriety and so have lost the ability to see or perceive as those who have stayed back in the cave. Personally, love has had a backwards meaning in my upbringing what with an abusive father who told me he loved me. This same father beat me at times, took my mother's money, would take and sell anything that was of value in our home, and abusively control my mother's social life along with mine. He told my mom he loved her as well. Many men in my father's family fit this mold, though not to the same extremes in the physical abuse. This is what they have been taught to them by their parents and their parents have learned from their parents. We might go back to a similar family with new knowledge and valuable insight as to what proper love is, but just as in Plato's fable we would be ridiculed and the enlightenment itself would be feared and be seen as madness or foolishness because they are afraid of the unfamiliar. Maybe even their pride is what keeps them there in the cave or perhaps they fear the ridicule and displacement now being suffered by you.
It very well can be a fearful endeavor to cast out all that was previously known and learned, and the shackles represent the severe difficulty in overcoming such a hurdle, but it must be done. Once the light is seen, there is no turning back. Should you ever go back into the cave to watch the shadows you will now have a new meaning in your perception. You will not meditate and think upon the shadow itself, but the object itself that casts the shadow. If you show us a baseball bat, we don't sit and marvel at the object but instead think of the game as a whole. We might think of personal experiences in playing the game or attending Dodger stadium when we were young and excited.
I think I've kind of gone off the nonsense end, but I'm tired. If anyone could offer up some strong criticism, I'm always appreciative even if you do just completely cut up my illustration and have me tossing it to the trash can once you're done.

Hi to evreyone! I Read both stories and I found out that the both stories have something in common. Both stories are talking about being trap in their ouwn world. Not being able to see the real life.... in The Allegory of the Cave by Plato is talking about bieng trap in other world not in real world...They are talking about the other person not be able to see the real meaning of life. He want to be in his own world, because of the comfort he feels. But in sertain point he see himself that he did not want to be out of his comfort until he realize that he was living in other world. In the Cathedral by Rymond Carver is talking obout the men is not wanting to come out of his comfort zone... He had sertain expectation from the blind man (sterotype)...The blind man had to come over and prove to the other man he was wrong on how the blind people are.......That's when he realize he was wrong had to come out of his comfort zone. At the same time he had to be real in what to tink about the fiction in the movies and the real life situation.

Allegory of the Cave.
ok this is what i took from it.
a cave is like a protective prison.it protects us from the outside world, but in doing that it leavesin the dark about things that might enlighten us and make us better. also a person who has been in his/her cave will infact get accustomed of being in the dark, because he/she has been there their whole life. when that person gets tired of living in darkness, that person leaves the cave and goes to explore the world outside. usually the person is blinded by the light of the sun because the eyes are not accustomed to ligt outside. but when the things get clearer, the human gets to really see the world as it is in reality. unfortunately for the people who do not make it out of their cave, it is pitiful because they their own prisoners in their own CAVE!
sorry did not read the second story. will try to though.

ATHIESTS, ATHIESTS, ATHIESTS! I AM TIRED OF ALL ATHIESTS. I'M NOT MAD THAT YOU DONT BELIVE IN GOD. THATS FINE. IF RELIGION IS NOT FOR YOU HEY MORE POWER TO YOU. BUT I HATE ATHIESTS FOR THE FACT THAT THEY TRY TO BELITTLE ANYONE THAT HAS FAITH. AS IF ONLY A FRAIL MIND CAN TAKE THE CONCEPT OF GOD WITHOUT QUESTION. I WAS TALKING TO A FRIEND OF MY COUSINS. THIS FRIEND HAPPENS TO BE AN ATHIESTS. NO BIGGIE RIGHT? TIL I WON A BET I HAD GOING WITH ONE OF MY HOMIES, AND I SAID THE WORDS "PRAISE GOD". I WAS THEN IN A SHIT STORM OF HATERED. I WENT FROM BEING A WELL EDUCATED MAN, TO A "MINDLESS FOLLOWER OF A RELIGION USED TO CONTROL MINDLESS DRONES" WELL AT LEAST THATS WHAT WE SAID. HE TRASHED THE FACT THAT I BELIVED IN A HIGHER POWER AND SAID THAT THOSE WHO NEED RELIGION LACK INTELLIGANCE. BUT FOR THE GRACE OF ALLAH I DIDNT CHOKE HIM TILL HE PASSED OUT. INSTEAD I LISTENED TO HIS ARGUMENT AND LET HIM SPEAK HIS PEACE. NOW HE FINISHED WITH THE CLASSIC ATHIEST LINE "IF THERE IS A GOD LET HIM STRIKE ME DOWN RIGHT NOW" THAN HE TOLD ME TO PROVE BEYOND A SHAWDOW OF A DOUBT THAT THERE IS A GOD. SO I REBUTTED WITH TWO POINTS:
A: IF THERE IS A GOD HE WOULD HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN TO STRIKE DOWN ATHIESTS ALL DAY. (THATS WHY GOD CREATED ME)
B: I ASKED HIM TO PROVE BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT THAT THERE ISNT A GOD. I WENT FURTHER AND POINTED OUT THAT MANY SCIENTIEST BELIVE THAT SCIENCE AND RELIGION GO HAND IN HAND. MANY PEOPLE THAT BELIVE IN THE BIG BANG AND EVOLUTION THEORYS ALSO BELIVE THAT A HIGH POWER PUT THESE MOTIONS INTO ACTION.
I JUS HAVE A HARD TIME UNDERSTANDING WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO RIDICULE THOSE WHO DONT BELIVE WHAT THEY DO. ON THE FLIP SIDE I HATE THESE CHRISTAINS WHO CONDEM EVERYONE TO HELL! BUT WITH THEM THERE IS NO REASONING...

I had a lot of different thoughts about this story. In the beginning I thought the husband was a big jerk. He was only judging a blind man by what hes heard. I didn't think that was fair. You cant judge a book by its cover. but i I continued to read, the husband seemed to start to understand that the blind man was the opposite. The blind man taught him how to see in a different perspective. He showed how to see reality and not to judge without knowing the actual truth.

I had to read this story a couple times to understand it. This story is talking about men being trapped in a cave. I think that the cave represents sort of like being trapped in another world and not being able to see reality. Some people stay trapped in their cave because they do not want to face the troubles of reality. Eventually these men have to leave the cave and face the good and bad of reality. I think this was a good story because some people hide in the dark rather than wanting to see the actual truth of reality. Their in denial I guess. Well that is what I got from that story. Well see everyone in class!

After rereading the stories a few times, i've realized that both stories have a similar topic. In the Allegory of the Cave, the people are prisoners of their own mind. It's mental. However, in the Cathedral, the blind man is trapped in a seemingly colorless world. For him however, it's physical. Yet, he is able to step out of his cave and live life as normally as he can and ... I just lost my train of thought. Anyway, I pretty much interpret The Cathedral is this: see the world with not only your eyes, but your heart as well. From the very beginning the husabnd seemed numb and careless as to what Robert meant to his wife. He did to a certin point i'm sure, but he seemed confident that blind men didn't laugh or smile or.. probably in general live. That they weren't educated and predictable. He also sounds a bit racist when he found out that the blind man's wife's name is Beulah. At the end of the story the blind man askes him to draw him a cathedral. As they finish the drawing the husband feels something he's never felt before. At the moment he claims, "It was like nothing else in my life up to now," and continues on with his eyes closed, I guess you could say he walked out of his cave, right there and then, and looked up into the sun.
Apologies if the post made no sense. My mom took my laptop away and refused to let me have it the whole weekend (TOTAL killer for the weekend). I'm posting at work right now, and a few customers came in, and called, while I was typing so my thoughts got really jumbled. >___< i'm sorry.

ok so this is what i got out of the allegory of the cave.
the human beings in the den our us(duh) and the sen is the world, or basically the regular peoples view of the world. the shadows or muppets the humans are staring at our like our media and government teaching us and showing us what we want to see and they want to show us to keep us in the cave. the chans the humans are in are "our reality" and what we are set to believe in or made believe. and the outside of the cave twoards the light is the real truth and like they say "the truth will set you free" and sometimes the truth hurts or is quite disturbing so thats why the light hurts the newly released humans.
(i understand alot more but its hard to put in words!!!)
thats what i got out of it :)
hopefully i got some things right.
and im working on the second story still
by the way. i got taken away my computer for not paying my cell phone bill last thursday so im using the schools sorry for it being sorta kinda late............anyone think thats a load of b.s. by my parents part though?

I had a read Allegory of the Cave twice because I had a hard time understanding it. I guess it is trying to say that the men are trapped in their own world which is the cave. They do not want to face reality, but eventually have to. In Cathedral the husband lives in his own world, but then he meets Robert and is able to see a different kind of world. I think both stories are saying that you need to live out of your world and understand others.

I found this story to be much more interesting then allegory of the cave. However, I was moved by both stories. This story was simply about a blind man coming to visit his former employee, who was his long time friend and her husband. Yet, her husband was not to thrilled about meeting some blind man because he already had a thought programmed in his mind which came from movies. so from there he had his own perspective of a blind person and had judged him without never knowing him. However, as the story continues he meets the blind man, gets to know him and his thoughts and perspective changes. And he comes to find out that he was the one that was blind and not the blind man. The irony of the story is to not be judgemental and to look whithin the inside and not the outside. For what you see is not always what you may get.

"I ONCE WAS BLIND BUT NOW I SEE"
THE CATHEDRAL WAS AN INTERSTING STORY. AT FRIST GLANCE IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE HUSBAND IS AN (EXPLETIVE DELETED, BUT IF U REALLY LOOK INTO IT HES JUST UNEDUCATED WHEN DEALING WITH OTHERS. ROBERT, THE BLIND MAN, GAVE RAYMOND A CRASH COURSE. IT SEEMS LIKE A SMALL THING TO DO, MAKE SOMEONE DRAW A CATHERDRAL, BUT IN ESSENCE HE WAS FORCING RAYMOND TO OPEN HIS MIND. ROBERT SHOWED RAYMOND HOW TO INTERACT WITH SIGHT, NOW JUS EXPERIANCE IT. I FIND IT IRONIC THAT IT WAS A BLIND MAN THAT TAUGHT RAYMOND HOW TO REALLY SEE. THIS STORY ALSO REACHES ME IN A PERSONAL SENSE. I HAVE HAD PEOPLE THAT I DID NOT REALLY UNDERSTAND SHOW ME HOW TO RETHINK MY LIFE, AND HOW TO LIVE MY LIFE BETTER. IT IS THE IDEA THAT IF U LET SOMEONE ELSE STAND IN YOUR POSITION THEY MIGHT MAKE A BETTER DESCION THAN YOU WOULD...

Could people be that mean to other people especially to blind people? I don’t understand why people hurt other people’s feelings. What do they get out of that? Bud is a person that does not care about people’s feelings. At first I thought bud’s wife and Robert were going to end up together. Robert and bud’s wife acted like if something was going to happen between them two. It looked like bud’s wife was getting along better with Robert than with bud her own husband. All those things that bud said about Robert before he arrived at bud’s house made e hate the way he was acting. I don’t like people that think they are better than someone that is disable in anyway. Like bud thinks that he is better than Robert. But at the end I’m glad that Robert didn’t feel bad about bud’s rudeness. I’m also glad that Robert and bud made a cathedral together that way bud would see who Robert really was. This story was very interesting I loved it. Once I started reading it I couldn’t stop.

Allegory of the Cave was kind of confusing, I didn't really get an understanding of it. Its seems like thier are this prisoners who live underground in the dark to the real world, and when the few that get a chance to experience the real world, don't really seem to like it at first because they couldn't really see anything because their eyes didnt adapt to the light like everybody else's did and it hurted for them. Over time thier eyes began to adapt in see how beatiful the world is and what they had been missing out on.

I read both stories, and both gave an important message. Cathedral came to me as the old saying; do not judge a book by it's cover. The husband judged to quickly, but when they got on a more personal level he began to comprehend. He saw a whole new way to see the world, through the blind man's eyes [if that makes sense]. My favorite part was when the husband and the blind man smoked two fat numbers, for it was very unexpected and relative. In addition, a line that stood out to me was the second last line "But I didn't feel inside anything." I believe in this moment in time the husband felt not only connected to the blind man, but the whole universe as a whole. He felt he was the blind man, he felt he was everything and nothing. He understood......

allegory of the cave
An amazing story that will forever ve one of the moments i opened up my eyes to the world. The moment i read the story and fully understood it i realized that the world seen from the eyes of the blind and lost is a sad epitamy of what hell is. Going through life being given the images that are forced uponed ones mind is no lage at all but rather slavery of the mind. The day one chooses to ascend above the ashes of those countless souls that have fallen before them is the day that one will reach true enlightenment and wisdom. The only reason that this is true is because only after ascention will one trully see the world for what it is and everything ones life could be. Well in the end when i hear the title Allegory of the cave a shiver runs down my back reminding me of how even at one point i was nothing more then a blind helpless soul.........

Cathedral.
Wow. This story stuck out to me. I kinda found it funny how at first the husband passed off as an insensitive person compared to his wife then towards the end of the story, I found that it was the wife who was being insenstive. I liked the point that the blind man showed robert towards the end of the story. He made robert realize that there is so much more to this world than just his senses. Its like how one uses the expression "open your eyes" and youre bound to realize things, well in this scenario, the expression would have went like "close your eyes and your bound to realize things" (hope that made sense).
I was also able to make a somewhat weird connection to allegory of the cave in the way that in order for the prisoner to expand his mind, he is delivered from blindness (from being in the cave) vice versa, in order for robert to expand his mind, he is introduced to blindness by the blindman.
or maybe that was just me...

Cathedral was a very good story, it was quite random as well. The man at first seems to hate the blind man for talking to his wife and does not really seem to care about his wife's death. At the end of the visit the blind man the the guy seem to become friends and he realizes never to judge a book by its cover. He imagines the blind guy as a man who wears dark glasses and uses a can, but when he actually meets him he realizes that he is just like any other person, except that he can not see. The story also has quite a random feeling like when the three start smoking weed out of the blue. He realized the blind man was not such a bad person after all, even though he did not know how to act with him at first.

Allegory of the cave
After reading Allegory of the Cave i understood it a little better. To me it seems about giving the individuals the message that they should stop living in a "miserable manner". They should stop believing everything that is upon on them. They should start questioning what they are being forced to believe. When an individual finally decides to do this, he might suffer at first but then he will begin to realize that what he thought was reality, is in fact, not reality. When tat brave sould finally starts questioning all the images that are being crammed into his head, his perception on life will be altered.

Allegory of the Cave
I did have to read it a couple times to fully get the meaning. The cave is the world that we live in today. The shadows and other incomplete images they is the way that the media is showing the world and how we are supposed to see it. If it were up to the media their way would be the only sied that we chould perceive everything that goes on. Once the person finally steps out and sees the world or the "outside" for themself, thats when we finally realize that we all have our own thought about things. We should take the media's word for it, but make up our own reactions.
Cathedral
At first I thought the husband was just a self centered person who did not want to be bothered with someone that is blind. Since he had never dealt with the blind, he did not want to feel uncomfortable in his own home, But as I read on it was just the inexperience that made him feel that way. Once Robert was able to talk to him and show him that there really isnt that big of a diference between them, he was able to see him for who he was. He also learned the very important lesson to not judge a book by its cover.

Alright first of all, I have to admit that English [essays, "Analzing", and writing] is something i have struggled since I can remember. I have tried to avoid all of those things. So right now I'm sorry if my "analyzing" is not top knotch =/
Mr. Hsiao!....I promise I'll put all my effort, I really need to pass this class, in order to trasnfer by next year!..haha
ok on to the reading....
.:. The Allegory of the Cave .:.
After reading this story from Plato's The Republic, I found a great similarity from the prisoners in the story to the prisoners of ourselves. In the story these prisoners are chained so tight that the only thing they could really see are the different shadows on the wall casted from the fire behind them. Shadows are the only thing they can see and experience, to them thats their only reality. It isn't until one prisoner is freed from the cave to see the light from the sun. Mesmerized by what was in front of him, the reality of the people, and objects that had casted the shadows all this time. The prisoner then goes back to the cave to tell the rest of the prisoners, what laid outside the cave; However at this point, he was yet another shadow to them, and his voice was just another echo. Being another shadow on the wall, will be the only reality that the prisoners will experience.
Reading the story I came across, that these prisoners resemble the people today. We are pisoners of our own cave. Everything we see even though is colored, has a name to it, is just simply a shadow to a lot of us. We do not really take our time to really appreciate what is in front of us, but rather look at it once, and move on. However it isnt until we finally free ourselves, by getting in touch wih all our 5 senses and appreciate in depth what we have in front of us. It is not until we free ourselves from the voices of our society, until we think for ourselves when we finally see and most importantly experience our true reality.
=]
pd...it was kinda hard to understand it, but once we get the real meaning, is a really nice allegory, fo sho!..lol

Allegory of the cave.
what i thought of this is how every one in this planet is chain up to a wall and fed lies. The shadows they see is the telelvison. All the movies, teen drama shows etc. etc. are lies. we are fed lies from the televison everyday. from the news and all these shows. in fact they prety much controll us. When we find out what reality is, it hurts beacuse all you saw was an imaginary world(tv shows etc.) Then you come to realize what the world realy is and becomes that much harder for us to bare with.
just my take
i wonder if it is really like that

"Allegory the Cave" is a philosophic story which views that most people are not enlighted.
in the story Plato argues with his entourages that these people also can be enlighted by seeing a light.

In the story The Allegory of the Cave, by Plato, it shows how most people cannot distinguish or refuse to see the reality of how things really are. Philosophers like Plato see the reality of things and therefore compose wise decisions or thoughts that may help others be guided to the right direction. Plato describes to Glaucon how a philosopher can see the light and true meaning of having wisdom. Apparently the description is reasonable for each time Glaucon speaks he agrees and understands Plato. At first Plato's fable was a bit confusing, but after reading it again i understood what Plato was trying to explain.

Well i just came to the blog and i was reading some past ones..and i wanted to let Talia know that i totally know how she feels. I used to be all bottled up...and to this day i still stuggle with sharing my feelings.
So lets see...life has been kinda hectic lately. I have a friend who has brain cancer...and has been struggling with it since about september. I am sad to say that she does not have the upper hand on this one. She had surgery yesterday...and it was scheduled to be a 15 hour surgery. It took the doctors almost 20 hours to do the surgery. The worst part of it all is that they still could not get all the cancer. They did remove the tumor, but the cancer had spread to other parts that they could not touch. Andi was totally fine at first, but is now fading in and out of conscienceness. She went into the surgery knowing that it was risky...but decided to do it anyways. Needless to say i am totally stressed out, and i dont want to lose this girl, she has grown to be one of my best friends, and has been there for me during the hardest times in my life. I want, no need her to be okay, but i guess there is nothing i can do accept hope for the best. she is only 19 years old, and she has not even begun to live her life, yet she is so calm about everything. She really put things into perspective to me when she said, "life is already short alyssa, and mine may be cut even shorter, so why should i worry, i want to be happy, even if i am in a hospital bed, that is why i dont worry." I dont know how she is so strong, i seriously think i have cried about it more than she has. I am worried sick, and i want so badly for her to beat this mess.
well it was nice to vent. It felt good haha!

The Allegory of the Cave by Plato, has a lot of interpertation that you have to do to figure it out. I could not help but to read it more than once to figure out everything he was trying to interpret. In my opinion the interpretation that i got from reading this was that Plato was trying to say that ever human had the ability to think beyond what was right infront of them. Many times we mistaken things for other objects which are real. We do not think beyond what we see. If we were to take the time to find answers and see beyond what the eye holds than maybe we can be smart enough to see beyond every question.
yay i got the hang of it :)
thanks mr hsiao your intruction were a super duper help haha.

The Allegory of the Cave
What I understand of this short story is that Socrates is telling Glaucon that we people see what they want to see. Some people don’t like to face the problems. They prefer avoiding them and continue life. However there is a time in life were they are going to face a problem and would not be able to avoid it. That’s when they are going to realize that all their life they have been avoiding problems that had a solution. That’s when people come out of their cave and look around and see what's around. People would realize that life is not a piece of cake you are going to go trough rough time but there are also going to be great time. Well that’s what I understood of the story when I read it.

noemi i like your quote, and yeah it true there are people that may think that no one cares about them, but they never realize that there is that someone that cares about them so much that they would do anything for them.
