SPRING 2010

ENGLISH 100/ 102/ 103/ 110
When you blog, in the Title, write your first and last name as you would as if you are turning in a paper to me. Then you do not have to write my name because I know you are in my class.

For example, one would write:

In addition, for the title, pick the topic of discussion, grammar/ organization/ content lesson or reading/literature/article title that we have discussed in class. Write the posts like this: write #1 Post or #2 Post, so I can easily keep track of them and how many you write.

Of course, you are welcome to write more than several posts, and in doing so is another form of participation and does count in the participation grade. Perhaps, in class, you may not participate all that much but in the realm of the blogosphere, you can from the comfort of your own home,Font size

* reflect on the day's class discussion, grammar, reading, writing, thinking, and life lesson or offer up an insight that you found particularly interesting, etc., etc.
*

* How does it change the way you think, reflect, and/or thought before on the subject?
*

* What actions might you take in the future? Anything is open to interpretation.

Of course, I need not go on and on about being respectful towards your peers' opinions and beliefs. If you disagree with another student's views be discreet about it: Do not say so and so is completely wrong because of this and that. Instead, say, I disagree with so and so and here are the reasons why I do. Go after their evidence and support and do not, I repeat do not attack someone else personally. This is supposed to be a forum for everyone to share their ideas and views.

I will enforce the blogosphere like I do the class if disrespect happens (either here) aimed at me or a fellow student as well elsewhere.

1. Use a quote: Introduce the author, title of work, and a verb, such as says: For example, Plato, in “Allegory of the Cave,” says, “Better to be a poor servant of a poor master than live as they do after their manner” (paragraph number).
2. Do relate the piece of literature to your life in some fashion and/ or media, pop culture, current events, and so forth.
3. Each post is worth 10 points—I have given you some sample posts for examples
4. I get an e-mail sent from the blogosphere saying who posted, and that is how I tally points.

The Allegory of the Cave

First of all I want to say that thanks to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, I kept saying "So Crates" in my head when I was reading this story. Secondly, I am not a big fan of philosophers. I too think they are somewhat pretentious. I did however have some insight on this story and here's what I think....

I read this story twice and I think that Socrates and Glaucon are having a conversation that most of us have had at one point in our lives about what's real or what is truth.

Sometimes we are blinded like the cave dwellers and only see what someone else wants us to see. Glaucon says "how could they see anything but the shadows if they were never allowed to move their heads". I grew up in a conservative Christian home, and feel that as a child and teenager, I was raised to see things a certain way and there was no other way about it. For example, my siblings and I weren't allowed to go to the movies because the movies were the Devil. And we grew up thinking that that was true and we'd go to hell if we watch Crocodile Dundee. Back then, the movie theater was a shadow on the wall we were to stay away from. It wasn't until my parents decided to "turn their heads around" and see the light. My first movie experience was Home Alone 2.

Like the cave dweller that was allowed to escape and see the world for what it truly is, to have to go back to my cave and the days of no "secular" music and no movie nights. To go back to playing the "name that shadow on the wall" game would be difficult for me also. It would be almost impossible for me to go back to thinking the same way I did before I myself, took my blinders and shackles off. Although I do not pity those who are still living in their caves, I do hope that one day we all have a chance to change our views on something particular in our lives and see a truth as it truly is.

Plato's Allegory of the Cave

I believe this passage was an appropriate one to start of the new semester. ..."let me show in a figure how far our nature is enlightened or unenlightened..." (Line 1) This whole passage shows the intellectual in our world along with the dim. The prisoners ,who are bound, only see the shadows displayed on the wall and associate what they see as something. For example, if someone who holds up a glass to the fire which projects a shadow of the glass, the prisoners will see the shadow of the glass and associate the shadow as a glass instead of the real glass. ..."would they not suppose that they were naming what was actually before them?" (line 9)
Without formal education we only see things 2-dimensional. We begin in this world as the prisoners did, looking at the wall, but only we can break the shackles and go onto the upper world to learn and comprehend our surroundings. ..."the journey upwards to be the ascent...into the intellectual world"... (line 36) So as I stated earlier, being the beginning of a new semester I take it as a reminder of how learning and understanding can be our liberator.

First let me just say that Michael over in the 100 class seems to be like a strong intellectual. I think whoever is in his class better bring their A game for class discussions because he's definitely going to bring some heavy thought and bold statements for everyone to chew on.

As for filler material, and please excuse me if I'm out of line in this direct address, but I doubt this is filler material. It's tremendously dense unless, most likely, you already have a degree in philosophy, literature and perhaps even mathematics. If it is indeed bull****, then for the sake of discussion and provocation of thought let's get out of it what we possibly can, yes?

I've been at this text for about two days, looking into the subject of set theory, religion, sex, Einstein, logic, philosophy and even getting some sort of reference to Frida Kahlo among other things.

There's a lot to really talk about, but I think the basic underlying idea is to always ask something to the effect of "Why?". The most focal passage would be in P2: "What does it mean to say that the concept 'red' designates red objects?" This is in reference to Immanuel Kant, an 18th century philosopher who at one point in his career, despite being a very extroverted personality, isolated himself for a "silent decade" to elaborate on the ideas of how the human mind acquires data and how that data is processed.
Further, upon looking into the life of Frege, one should note that his "career" as a philosopher stemmed naturally from his mathematical work. He sought to prove that basic mathematics was not based on axioms but on logic. In this endeavor, he began questioning deeper, more philosophical subjects. He questioned the idea of "meaning" itself.

I want to bounce off of what Andrew Murphy and what he had to say about AOTC. With application of Agamben's philosophy in this passage, one would see that his thought is incomplete and with fault. Formal education can also be merely a voice in the cave or another shadow cast on the wall. According to Agamben, we must dig deeper for truth. To optimistically take everything presented us by professors and teachers throughout our education, both elementary and advanced, is to only look to another kind of shadow in the two dimensional realm. It is not until we go deeper and further back to the roots of these ideas and lessons and, dare I say, real life application and experience with said ideas that we truly might emerge from the cave.
I believe Agamben's text here might be considered a sort of specifications list for Plato's AOTC, albeit too dense and roundabout for the common reader to really stick around for the moral of the story.

There should be no authority here on this earth that goes by unquestioned and without comparison. It is our responsibility as individuals to seek truth, and though we should take heed to wisdom of past, we must not be constrained to the traditional methods of such a critical journey. Cast off unbalanced subjectivity, and be prepared to have your world and what you believe turned upside down now and again. Push on upward towards truth and love no matter the pain or hardship.

"The day is soon coming when turning your back won’t be an option.
Keep telling yourself what you really don’t believe.
You can compromise what you know to be true,
and you can turn off all of your senses,
but in the end you’ll see nothing stands between a man and his maker.
No matter what it’s your decision."

Reading the title i predicted that this was story was going to be another lesson in the mechanics of english and boy was I wrong.
This text hits hard some of the basic ideas of metaphysics. According to my understanding of this text, any object or a thing cannot be classified by a name since the object and the name of the given object are two different things (hence the title of the paper).

To me, this brings in question the basic principle of exsistence itself. Take for example the number five (5) it exsists in phonics as "five" and in graphics as "5" yet nobody has ever seen the number five only the concept of it. Giorgio Agamben states that "if we try to grasp a concept as such, it is fatally transformed into an object, and the price we pay is no longer being able to distinguish it from the concieved thing"

I suppose what Giorgio Agamben is trying to put in question is the paradox of existence itself since he says "the idea of a thing is the thing itself". Going by that assumption, i believe that it is necessary for an existence of a universal property that can both satisfy the objects in the real or the physical sense and the non real or the conceptual sense. the lack of this property would nullify the exsistence of all things such as the universe itself and all its inhabitants.

    Overwhelmed? Intimidated? maybe not...

First day in English 103 and what I see before Professor Hsiao are two things: 1) there's students here that are half my age and 2) half the class know each other from a prior class. I assume they have taken Professor Hsiao class before :-) I am assuming that before I Professor Hsiao comes in, I would get "reassuring feed back", but I was unsuccessful...until he came in and a surprising greeting from his "prior students".

He look very young and sadly, I'm not (laughing) Nonetheless, Professor Hsaio got to the point and he stated,"it was not going to be an easy class", he went on to say, "I wouldn't be offended if you walked away". Professor Hsaio, I got the picture. I was more intimitated by the syllabus (laughing) but with all seriousness, I resigned from a government position, my financial stability is in question but I am determined to being a full time student and getting my degree.

Now, for those students just starting out, I envy all because it took me over 20 years to figure that a college education and getting a degree should have been a priority for me, but for me everything was backwords; I wanted to be independent and make my own money, so I went to work, I have a family of my own, but what lacking was a "college education";self-worth;satisfaction in my life.

I had my ups and downs...one of my ups in life is having a family of my own (daughter and wife) and one of the downs in life is not being happy in a job that is not taking me nowhere, but being left out of greater opportunities which requires a higher education.

With that being said, intimidating instructors and overwhelming syllabus' and materials... the fact of the matter is that I am here to learn and and succeed; there's no more excuses for working because I lift that behind for possible and promising opportunities. Will see what happens...

Hi everyone from before and hello to all the newbies. Audrey is right on when she says that Professor Hsiao's class will be very tough but there are days like today that was pretty simple. And yes these days are few...but still good. Anyway so what else can you expect from this class? Well it consists of writing, reading, and discussing so if you do not like any of that i suggest you look for a different class. Please do not feel intimidated (Dan if you were serious), but do take this class very seriously. If you are shy, don't be. We really do end up like a family in the end. This class is not for the weak, you will work hard. But you will feel a great sense of accomplishment in the end.
    Dan,
There were a few people in our last English 100 class returning back to school from time away. One was a sweet old grandmom and she pushed through it, so i trust you can too. You will do fine, I can already see your a great writer. They key is to be real and speak from experience.

  4. Hello everyone,
Well the first thrity minutes of sitting in Mr. Hsiao's class, was so intense that i felt like instantly quiting. It was surprising to see Mr.Hsiao syllabus. This vast amount of information portrayed a millions words. It was evident that he had passion for teaching, and really wanted to help his students grow. This class does not seem like a typical one! But with dedication all things are possible=)
Brenda,it is very encouraging to read that if new students (like myself) stick to the course, "you will feel like a great sense of accomplishment."

Thanks Brenda...for the record, I'm am very serious, I cannot afford anymore time. I am determined to study hard, but like Professor Hsaio and Audrey said, "we all become a family", if the unity is not there we are going to be ineffective as a "family". We definitely cannot be shy because, this class thrive through class participation; everyone's feedback matters, such as, blogging. I like this, but I admit, public speaking is a undertaking.

I guess, it depends on the class and how comfortable I am. What I need to do is truly get involved so that I am comfortable with fellow students around me and vice versa...it's going to be tough because I've always thought in my mind the what if(s); what if, the students I'm presenting my paper to do not understand or what if I stutter or hestitate and not say a thing?

Well, we are all in this together and if we are going to be a family, we have to be resectful and supportive to one another. Thanks again, Brenda...I hope to work with you and your group sometime.

Greetings people. First day of this class was pretty interesting. Budget cuts to California's education system never cease to be daunting and as such, there's never a shortage of pessimism on my part when seeking classes to enroll in. The class wasn't even full. Despite having been somehow excluded from the waiting list I still made it in...and now contemporary education, innovative methods to learn how to write. BLOGGING? Bloody hell mates this class is going to be off the hook.

Well let me start off by saying, I'm so excited that this blog exists. I'm already an avid member of blogger, I'm glad I now get to do some real writing and soul searching with my fellow classmates. My 1st impression of this class is: 1) I'm really going to have to work for my grade and 2) if I really put my all into this class, I will definitely get a lot in return. I'm nervous about the weeks to come, but ready to be challenged.

As I was reading the first few posts of the semester, I looked up at my television and thought to myself, "Does everyone REALLY love Raymond?" I most certainly do not. "Then why are you watching?" one might ask. The television is merely background noise at this point. Maybe I should change the channel to something a little more inspiring like ESPNews. Now I have Tim Kurkjian and his thoughts on Mark McGwire's admitting his use of steroids as my background noise. That and the gardeners in the distance. I am officially rambling.

Greetings and salutations to all my new and old classmates. I see that Audrey started the blogging party off. Those of you in English 103 will have your hands full with Audrey. In a good way of course. I hear that many of my classmates of old (English 100) are in the 103 class. To those who remember me and hold me close to your hearts, I bid you a fond and hearty hello and good luck. Those of you who do not remember me or chose to forget me, I bid you the same only with a frown and tear in my eye.

To all the students who are taking Prof. Hsiao for the first time I would like to say that with a little hard work and elbow grease, you too can be part of his elite MVP squad. Our "father figure" is tough but fair. Just do good work and have original ideas.

Dan, you should see your age as an advantage. You probably have some good life experiences that you can include in your writing. I am saying this because I think I am the oldest guy in the 102 class! You will be just fine.

My first class was a good one. I was lucky enough to sit next to Jessica and Catrina. I told Catrina that this semester I would be silent. She said she would be also. Then for some reason I responded, "We will be silent, but violent. Like a fart." I do not think she found it as funny as I did. For the record Catrina, we will not be the farts of the class. When I saw that Raul was also in our class, I knew that this semester would be solid. There are also a lot of students from Prof. Hsiao's Golden West College class. Did you make that much of an impact that these students are making the commute from the 949 (or 714) to the 562?

I am looking forward to working with many of my fellow classmates.

To all the Twilight fans in Prof. Hsiao's other classes, we have in 102, our very own Edward look-a-like (Sorry Arrio).

    War passing English 100
    War also passing English 102

    Dan,
I'm glad to see you are in school again. And you do not have to be shy, like everyone is saying, this class does become like a family.

    Adrian,
Twilight look a like! I'm going to enjoy this class!

For those who did not notice me standing in the front of the room as one of the old students, I am. I took Prof. Hsiao's class last semester at Golden West.

Why would someone take a teacher with that big of syllabus again? Yes the syllabus is huge, but do not stress. We have time to go through everything together. The workshops, as well as just talking with each other is very helpful.

    To prepare the new students:
Make sure you read what he assigns. That does make a difference especially when we take our quizes at the begining of the class. Keep up with what we are doing in class, and you will be fine. Prof. Hsiao is a great teacher.

    Enjoy this semester!

    Hello everyone!
It is nice to see that Professor Hsiao has such a strong following of students. However, my first impression of the class was “HOLY CRAP!! This is not going be an easy or just typical English class”. The size and detail of the syllabus is enough intimidate just about any new student. From what I read above I am excited/scared/overwhelmed about this class. I look forward to challenging myself and stepping outside my comfort zone, if the outcome means I will be a better well rounded student and person.
A little bit about me: I am 27 years old, married, and my wife and I just bought a condo in Garden Grove. I originally went to school to for cabinetry and furniture making. However, in 2009 I had my 3rd major knee operation (it’s a long story ask me in class if you want to know about it.) making it impossible for me to work full-time in the career which I love. I am now back in school full-time to earn a Bachelors degree in Industrial technology to be able to teach woodshop. You know what they say “those who can’t do it, teach it” ;-) (no offense Professor Hsiao).
I look forward to getting to know you all and becoming part of this “family” everyone is talking about.

    See ya later

  13. Hello everyone!
It took me awhile to get to this page... I have never Blogged... EVER! However, I am excited for this class.

Based on the enthusiasm Mr. Hsiao's previous students have on the class I can see Mr. Hsiao has had an impact on everyone. As Mr. Hsiao passed out his syllabus I was intimidated of the amount of information he gave us before we even started reading the syllabus. But as we went through it... half of it are letters of previous students expressing thier great experience in Mr. Hsiao's class; this put me at ease. I am excited to get started and am ready for the challenge.

Brenda I am so excited to see that you are taking Mr. H again. Hopefully I will be in your class. To everyone else, I too am a fellow student of Mr. Hsiao's. I just wanted to reach out to everyone who is feeling a little intimidating by the class, because I know the feeling. My first day of Mr. Hsiao's class I was like, what have I done? Do not get discouraged. There are so many former students (me included) who are always willing to help out. Just keep in mind that you will gain so much insight on yourself as a person with this class. By far this is the most influential class I have ever been in.

I also had to face the challenge of stepping out of my shell, and man was it hard. Taking that step helped me write some of my best papers. I always tell Mr. H that his class is like my therapy session, because after i leave class I feel as if I have let so much off of my mind. Do not be afraid to step out of that shell.

Hello fellow English 102 classmates et al. I too am a former student of Professor Hsiao. I took his English 103 class this past summer...and I survived! Where is my " I survived Hsiao's class" T-Shirt??? kidding!

Please refrain from being intimidated by Professor Hsiao's bible-thick syllabus...do refer to it often! Do you know when you are in line at Disneyland for Indiana's Jones Adventure and the man with the hat says " It is unlike anything you've ever experienced before." Yeah, it is kind of like that...

Your writing skills will improve tremendously! You will learn a lot about yourself and from other people as well. You not only grow as a writer but also as a human being.

Jacqueline, I am sure that as time progresses you will become a blogger queen.

    Salutations, Folks!

I guess I should begin by admitting the fact that I, like some of the other students on here, was a little intimidated by this new course. Then again, I was intimidated by my previous English course. I still feel as if my passing the class was some sort of fluke, but that couldn't be. Also, there is no sense in dropping because I have to pass this class sooner or later if I intend to transfer. From what I've read in the letters to Mr. Hsiao, he sounds like a great professor. His students have been quick to reassure us all of this as well. With that said, I'm here to stay. I fully intend to apply myself and do my best to get a decent grade. I look forward to becoming part of a new family. Also, I'd like to thank Mr. Hsiao's former/current students for the encouragement.

    Cheers,
    John H.

Wow! I can actually remember what number post I am on, hahaha. Yes, everyone my name is Samantha Shepherd and I am in the english 102 class and it is kind of weird to put 102 because i keep wanting to put 103 and somewhere logically I keep thinking that it should be 104 and not 102, but whatever, anyway! I am part of the infamous Samantha-Priscilla team as everyone will most likely hear about in class this semester. I hope that everyone stays in the class because it is a worthwhile one. There was something that stuck out in my mind and it was a question that was asked to me by one of the new students that we had to talk to in class (ha! I am no longer branded as a new student) and she asked me if the class was hard. Now I know that we're supposed to respond to another post, but I am going to respond to that question and my answer was that I did not find it to be too hard. As I started thinking about it, I realized that indeed I did put a lot of work and effort into the class and as an outsider looking at myself I would say that it is a hard class, but I said that it wasn't because I actually enjoyed doing what I did in the class. How is a class supposed to feel hard when you actually enjoy what it is that you are doing and you want to do more? After much deliberation I came up with that it indeed can be a hard class, but the more you put yourself into it, the better chances you are going to be happy and it will seem like less work (because work in my mind is definitely something that I do not want to do and is frustrating and something I have to push myself to accomplish; sorry for the fragments, but I am exhausted from cleaning my room!). Yes, so there you have it everyone. It is what you make of it and if you put in your hard work and determination then you will definitely enjoy this class and you will most likely want to come to class and make strong connections with people and have a new family you can share your life with even if it is for only a semester.
Enjoy everyone and see you in class tomorrow night!

PS) I will definitely have to get some coffee or SOMETHING before next class because I am definitely not used to going to class at night. So me taking night classes not because I have to, but because I want to (I signed up for this class around last November or something-one of the first chances I had) is saying something.

Alriggghhtt! I'm excited to start Professor Hsiao's class. I am a former student of Professor Hsiao and let me tell you, he means business, but in meaningful way. As class started i was very excited because i knew that former students that i recognized were going to be in the class as well. As class went on i noticed that former students and new students were seperated-noticable by how comfortable everyone was- and remembered that i was the same way last semester. As time goes on i'm sure that the new students will understand why the former students are open :]

To Jacqueline- I am sure you will get alot out of this class, but of course you have to put in before you get something out. My advice to you is dont be afriad to share your thoughts, we all have our ideas and interest, but nobody can say what is on "your mind" sooooo don't be afraid to share your thoughts.

you will do great, just make sure you do all that is assigned :)

Ps. keep blogging, you're off to a great start :]

I am Zoila from English 103. I am very excited about Mr. Hsiao class but at the same time I can't help it but be scared. This class is so overwhelming for me because I have never blogged (this is my first time) or acted before.

When I was reading the (huge) syllabus, my first impression was "run" (seriously, that was my first thought), but after finish reading the Letters to Mr. Hsiao I realized that I should not be "judging a book by its cover" and that this class is going to help me in my future; moreover, I am willing to give my 110% to this class.

I am also really excited about this class becoming a family. I know that I will make really good friends in this class!! ^_^

    To Janelle,

Thanks to your outstanding pun I am certain that I belong in this class. I can only hope that more people share your sense of humor. I live for levity, stuff like that just makes my day. Don't get me wrong, I am a hard worker, but I find laughter to be an integral part of living a good life. I look forward to experiencing Mr. Hsiao's sense of humor as the semester progresses. I hope he too can appreciate a good pun every now and then. Thanks again, Janelle.

    Hello to everyone,
Well it look like half of the class knows each other from a previously class. There was a point in which I was considering of dropping the class like I always do. Then again if I keep doing that I will never finish school. So I have decided to stay in this class for many reason. Hopefully I wont recreate later in to the semester. So I am looking forward of meeting new people and learning news ways of expressing my self with my writing.

I'm actually excited after reading everyone's blogs and feed backs. First things first, "I love this source of communication"! However, please be very careful what you type. I say this because when I was working in front of the computer, most of my communication was through e-mailing and sometimes I have to cc my supervisor to back up my responses to other departments and divisions. Thus, I would get called in my supervisor's office for my choices of words, typos and font usage which I thought was offending but I didn't realize until later that some words may be miscontrued or taken the wrong way that may cause misunderstanding and sometimes I get e-mails sent to me with a question mark. For example: font sizes larger than twelve, or font color other then black and anything other than Times New Roman may be considered "too much" and unprofessionally sound in a business such as communicating with doctors, administrative officers, and directors. Nonetheless, this maybe a lesson to be learned in the future when you move on from being a student going into being a professional.

Well, day two of class is coming up, hope my experience will be a good one each and everyday.

    See you all, tomorrow:-)

Hello everyone. First of all i would like to apologize for not having a picture up. The reason is that I usually don't take pictures of myself or do not have any save on my computer. but I will upload it A.S.A.P.

Well as far as this class it seems to be very challenging, but like everyone else, I am up for one. One thing that i really enjoyed seeing were old students of Mr. Hsiao. this is always a good thing because students only come back if the instructor is kool. well i look forward to the class and meeting new people.

by the way, this is my first time with this blogging thing so it's pretty weird for me but i will try to do my best.

Thoughts of the Beginning of a Journey

I got intimidated with this class when I received an e-mail from Professor Hsiao as I was reading it i was thinking, oh no, what am I getting myself into. Evaluate our writing what! I have not taken an English class for years. Then I refocused myself on what I need to do in order for me to continue to getting a step closer to my career. So, I went to class and here I see Mr. Hsiao handing us a packet, oh wow, our first assignment I take a look more closely. Its our syllabus? I begin to panic in my head but as we go on to reading what it is required in this class is not bad at all. It seems like we are going to be doing a couple styles of writing and at the same time learn more about ourselves which makes the class more interesting and that lets me know that I will not get bored. It really seems that this class will be a blast, and I'm ready to join you all for the journey. =)

    Whats good everyone?

Well this is my fourth tour of duty with Mr. Hsiao and let me just say to all the students secodn guessing on taking this course that the rewards gained from this class outweighs the risks. By rewards i dont only mean attaining the grade the one wants but one also gains a completely new perpsective on life. In my opinion that is worth way more then a good grade in the class.

    K Enough being serious.

Walking into the class on monday night i could feel the anxiety and frustration in the air. I absolutely love the look on the newbies faces as they read the textbook of a syllabus. It never gets old. I couldnt help but laugh on the inside. But to all of the students second guessing this class i will tell you what will be expected of you. This is like a preview of the semester. The holy grail if you will. If you do not like dense and emotionally heavy readings, if you dont like getting made fun of, if you do not have valid opinions and do not like to participate in discussions with your peers, you should probably drop. Your peers wont make fun of you but Hsiao will so you have to have a good sense of humor.

    But yeah im just rambling.
Im looking forward to meeting new people.
    Lets have fun with this.

  32. Hello Class!

I want to start off by saying hello and welcome to the blog. I must say I am not too excited that the semester has started, but I am really happy to see familiar and new faces in Hsiao's class. I want to let all the new comers know that Hsiao is an awesome teacher. He is strict and there will be days where you want to pull your hair out, but trust me it is all worth it in the end. When Mr.Hsiao says the class is going to become a family, we will it may not seem that way now but this is true. I wonder what Mr.Hsiao has in store this semester. I am excited, but also nervous.
Adrian, Catherina, and all the original English 100 class im so sad to see us in seperate classes. Adrian I really want to see that Edward look alike. Zolia I can tell you are going to be a blogger.

It feels a little too late to say welcome to the new people. I am sure you all have read tons of welcomes already. ADRIAN! I wish you were in our class.. Dam you! ::waving fist:: I just hope to see you on the field trips (: As well as Jessica (miss you) and everyone else from English 100 taking Professor Hsiao this semester. It is funny reading how everyone was intimidated by how Professor Hsiao came about with his expectations and a book of a syllabus. I read people mentioning how they wanted to drop it then and there. That is exactly how I felt. My first impression of Professor Hsiao last semester was one I dare not say. (you know what I mean =P) I decided to stay and give it shot. I did need the class anyway. I may say it was a hell of an experience. The best I have had in my life school wise. Althogh I am excited of how this semester will turn out, how we will bond and get along, I do not think it will be the same as last semester.

All I have to say for the new people is to do your work. It will be a little challenging but, it will all be worth it at the end. Also, be ready to work on run-ons and fragments like there is no tomorrow. He will drill them into you, trust me.

I am still crossing my fingers to be able to go to the horse ranch for sure this semester. It IS one of the reasons I took this class, not to mention that Professor Hsiao asked me to XD When I was going to ask if we were going to the ranch, I think Ana, you said something and you, Tess, and Janelle looked at me started laughing, what was it that you said? lol

It is nice to see familiar faces and names on the blogosphere.

It took me 15 minutes of reading posts and watching The Office to come up with the word "familiar" for my opening line. Some intellect I am right?

I just wanted to say the following:

Trini - I am sorry that I am not in 103. I will do my best to keep you entertained via the blogosphere. I too am hoping we get to go to the horse ranch this semester. I found some killer cowboy boots at the Goodwill and have not had a good reason to wear them. If we do go, we should get all cowboyed out! I can imagine Prof. Hsiao in a cowboy hat and boots!

Brenda - After re-reading my post about "silent but violent'', I too started laughing at myself, to myself. Who says things like that!

Tess - I told 102's Edward he looks like Edward and he replied, "I brush my hair a little differently than he does." Good stuff!

I wanted to end with a quick hello to Ana and Janelle.

    War The Office
    War Conan O'Brien
    War TiVo

    I am out.

Okay so this is my first post!! I am very excited to begin this new class, and I must say it has so far been very different from any class I have ever taken at Cerritos. After reading some posts, I am relieved to discover that I was not the only one reluctant of staying in Mr. Hsiao's class upon meeting him; but from what his past student say about him, it sounds like this class is an unforgettable experience. I hope that by taking this class I will be able to voice my opinions on different subjects, it is currently very difficult for me to do so because I am very, very shy. I dont think I can anything else other than to wish everyone a great semester!

I am truly looking forward to this semester. I have not taken an English class in a very long time. And like many have mentioned before, upon laying eyes on the bible according to Mr. Hsiao (aka the syllabus) and furthermore, its extensive reading made me want to run for the hills! However, I think I'm going to enjoy this class very much thought I'm not going to lie, I'm scurrrred! But no pain no gain, right?

I look forward to getting to know you guys. To Mr. Hsiao's former students, thank you for the advice and for putting the rest of us rookies at ease.

It is very nice to see how much everyone likes Mr. Hsiao. It is comforting to see that students have taken his classes and have come back for more. As I said earlier I am one of those "newbie’s" in his class and I look forward to becoming part of the “family” that everyone is talking about.

Many prior students have said they are willing to help out and for the "newbie's" to ask questions, well I have a few questions that may help others and I prepare for what is ahead.

#1 How much acting will we be doing?
#2 How much reading will be assigned? (I'm not really an avid reader so this is an important thing for me.)
#3 How hard of a grader is Mr. Hsiao?
#4 For you "repeat offenders", What is so special about Mr. Hsiao class that brings you back to him? Maybe give examples of experiences you have had in the class or with him.

    Enjoy the Rain!

    Hi Everyone!

Name is Romualdo Martinez but I prefer to be called Jay R. (with a period). I like to get straight to the point and not beat around the bush too much. So let's get to it!
I joined the Marines right after high school because I was unsure of what path to take. At the age of 22 I was running an advertisement company in Chicago IL. At 25 I relocated to LA and was a sales manager for Auto Trader. At 27 I was recruited by Target as a Logistics Manager. At 29 I was recruited by Lowe's as an Operations Manager. Which brings me to why I am here taking this course. As an Operations Manager I found myself working 70+ hours a week, and though the money was great, after having a fallout with my superior and realizing that this would be the rest of my life if I did not do something about it now, I decided to come back to school. This will be my last semester at Cerritos College and I am currently taking 17 units. Though professor Hsiao has made it clear that this class will be no walk on the Boardwalk, I say bring it on! Success is non optional for me.

Prof. Hsiao is one of the most caring teachers i have ever had and cant wait to see what is in store for us this semester.if you ever need help or feel that you need someone to talk to, please dont be afraid to approach me.so, ya. hope to see you all tonight!!!! to mark, i know that you had a few questions about the class and i would be more than happy to answer them for you. so, ya.

#1 How much acting will we be doing?
we will be doing at least one play but i am not sure exactly how we will be doing it, like reading it as a class but he did say that we would be presenting, so you might want to keep that in mind.

#2 How much reading will be assigned? (I'm not really an avid reader so this is an important thing for me.)
for some reason, Prof. Hsiao loves to give out readings and there will be a reading assignment almost every class. there will be roughly like 20-25 readings but they are not novels or anything. we have some poems, some short short stories and a couple 4 pagers. i am not an avid reader as well, but dont worry too much about the reading. we will almost always go over the readings the next class that way you are on the same page as everyone else. :)

#3 How hard of a grader is Mr. Hsiao?
i dont want to call him an easy grader but he is very fair, if you show that you have given an effort in everything you do, he will grade you way easier than if you just half-assed it. excuse the language. the essays are where most of your work will be and just simply read the stories. there will be quizzes that add up real quick, but, i have gotten an A in both of his other classes so, he is a fair and some what easy grader.

#4 For you "repeat offenders", What is so special about Mr. Hsiao class that brings you back to him? Maybe give examples of experiences you have had in the class or with him.
it isnt anything in particular but the experience that we got from being in his class. the first time i took him, i was so overwhelmed and scared to continue, i was in a class full of people who have never took him so i didnt know what to expect. he is such a loving and caring teacher and wants all of his students to leave his class with more than just the basic english knowledge. our class actually became a family and the feeling that you could enter a room and no one would judge you or argue what you would say was nice. he comes off as being very hard and strict, but he is very easy going, caring teacher. sounds dumb, but before the semester ends, you will see that this class of strangers, will become a family and will hang out even outside of school.

if you are woried about the class still, give it a couple of class meetings before you make up your mind. Prof. Hsiao doesnt make anyone stay if they dont want, but if you leave early, you wont get to enjoy allof the fun things that we do in class. (not work wise) there are feild trips, and special suprises, and food days. so, ya. My name i Danielle again and if you have any other questions, feel free to ask :D

Concerning your post i must note that your sentences are very long...in reading them i feel as though my brain is taking a long trip down a spiraling staircase with which there seems to be no end. Nevertheless, it makes for interesting reading because the first thing said at the beginning of the sentence is promptly overrun by the subsequent ideas stampeding forth from the remainder of it.

First off, my thoughts and prayers go out to all of the Haiti earthquake victims. It breaks my heart to know of the horrible damages and deaths this quake has caused.

    To all the newbie’s-
I am Yesica or Jessica whichever is easier.. This is my 2nd class with Prof. Hsiao, I migrated from his English 100 class well more like English 100 family (I miss you guys!). I am a huge animal lover! I talk about my dog Buddy like a mom talks about her kids (in a good way). Team Edward all the way! Lol.. I am a Twilighter, and if you ask me about Twilight I will probably talk, & talk, & talk.. lol.. Please don’t feed/ give me chocolate! It hype’s me up! Lol.. More than anything, I really look forward to getting to know all of you a little better.. I really hope Mr. Hsiao’s syllabus didn’t intimidate you, it will be a fun ride and I hope you are all ready for the fun moments we will all share as a class. I really recommend going to at least one or two field trips!

    To my English 100 family!!

Hi Guys!! I miss you all so much!! I hope that we get to reunite once again, if its not at the field trips, it will most definitely be at happy hour =) I was soo happy to see Cathrina, Adrian, & Raul in my class! I wish you all the best! & we must must do happy hour soon!

    To answer Mark's questions

#1 How much acting will we be doing?
    - Acting is a first in the class.. So I cant really answer this one..

#2 How much reading will be assigned?
    - We will probably be reading short stories or poems for homework. It is important that you read the short storied because he will quiz us on the next class.

#3 How hard of a grader is Mr. Hsiao?
    - Well according to Prof. Hsiao, he does not give out A’s.. You really have to work hard for your grade. The first couple of papers I was disappointed in my-self since they were C’s. But overtime my work actually got better. In a way he is a hard grader if you did not follow instructions. But, he will tell you what you did wrong and how to improve.

#4 For you "repeat offenders", What is so special about Mr. Hsiao class that brings you back to him?
    - Mr.Hsiao gives you a different view of life. Most of the writing we did in class was about ourselves. So this helped us open up in a more comfortable way without being judged. He also helped us how to express our feelings in writing. Many times we simply just wrote about what is going on in our life, being that it is stressful to be a college student, I felt comfortable to know that he actually care and gave us feedback. He also anonymously reads peoples essays and reflections, to give the class an idea of what other students have in their mind. Also, he gets his students involved in a lot of community work.. Either by visiting a homeless shelter or helping at a food drive. This gives us the opportunity to participate and do something good for the community. Lastly, Mr. Hsiao does not judge you or make fun of you on anything you say in class.. I say this because many times we went over stories we read, and I would always have the complete opposite interpretation.. lol.. So don’t be shy to speak your mind, & be prepared for the ride!

Day two, here and gone...but yet my experience in today's class, I was not as daunting to me then the first session. Of course, I was nervous in the beginning and anticipating what Professor Hsiao is going to say to us. Fortunately and with a sigh of relief, I did not get that impression:-) Usually, it takes sometime for me to relax, but I felt like being in class. Moreover, Professor Hsiao was more welcoming; he was interested in knowing the new students but yet be able to joke around with his former students which gave me a vive that is going to be a "fun class"!

However, I am mindful why I am here whether I get a "not so good paper" or even a "mediocre" paper, I know what I need to do to be a better writer and speaking skills and that Professor Hsiao will guide me through the "roughness" and "rustness" of my writing skills, yikes! I just realize when writing my first diagnostic paper that it was more personal than being just a stereotypical life experience. But I'm sure Professor Hsaio will let me know. To be honest with you, I use to stall and write nothing at all. More so, I would stay quiet, be nervous and break a sweat if I got called on, now...thank godness I took that stint off of my arm and raised my hand. I think I will be okay; WE will be okay:-)

Today's lecture was informative and it is just what I need for a refresher before we get down to serious writing.

Trini, thank you for introducing yourself and providing me a little information about yourself. I'm glad to know you and that you have taken Professor Hsiao's class before. I will certainly need some feedback (proof read) on future papers we will be writing. Class, I hope you are willing to get to know me and I would be honored if you can assist me if I get stuck somehow, please note, I'm bashful, maybe just a little. I hope you don't mind if I walk up to you and introduce myself; I'm really a nice guy:-) thank all.

    Oh boy,

let me start off by saying I join the club of those who got intimidated by Prof. Hsiao's syllabus. I was already scared as it is taking this class because I am one of the few students whose English is not perfect ( it is actually my second language) so after looking at the syllabus I was done. However, after talking and reading some of Prof. Hsiao"s former students posts, I realized that even though it was going to be a hard class (that's for sure, huh!) it was going to be at least fun and entertaining. And in some way I believe this class is not only going to help me in my writing skills, but also to come out of my shell as many have done.

    Enjoy.............!!!

    :-) Smile God loves you..!!!

Good evening boys and girls. I'd like to say hi.
    Hi.
Welcome newcomers, those in 102 particularly. It's going to be a bit of work if you want an A here, but it's not impossible. I will say that if you're shy about speaking up in class and adding to the discussion, I'd recommend passing this class up. If you've got some critical thought on what's being read, give us your piece and let us bounce off of it or, in some cases, pick it apart. Don't be thrifty with your opinions, but just the same, bring some sound reason to accompany. I'm hopeful to find some new perspectives this semester.
I'm looking to buckle down this time around and be consistent with the blog and connecting with new people. I had a bit of a difficult time with the latter the past semester for unmentioned reasons, but I won't have that problem anymore. I'm going to miss Mr. Swisher for sure; he became a sort of a role model or father figure in my eyes, and I pray for him all the best.
Now, about the new mix in 102: It's looking formidable as of yet. I'm way stoked to be reunited with Art and Ray from the shining star Spring class, and I'm hoping Alyssa stays along for the trip as well. We are the remnant of an amazing collective group that I will never forget. I am also glad to see Jessica, Cathrina and Adrian from the 100 class I sat in with last semester.
Sprinkle in some of the Golden West students, and I'm looking for a solid mix.
    Let's make it happen; THINK!

Hey goodmoring everyone! I'm new to this so I might have some constant questions to ask you who are familiar. I'm a little shy but I'll be okay once I warm up. This is my Third year at Cerritos College. I can't wait to move on, but it's been quite fun for the most part. This semester seems to have it's work cut out for me. I'm always up for a challenge and English 102 might just be my match. So here we go, remember we're all in this class together, although we all have our own work I like to think of it as a team. I'm looking foward to meeting the rest of my classmates and building friendships and intellectual partnerships. Thank you!!!!!

Ok, so I've never blogged before, nor have I had to fight my computer trying to figure out how to blog...so it's a new sense of stupidity for me. Please bear with me!

I'm very excited to meet new people especially after I saw how old students interacted with each other. It's nice to see that there are still professors who care deeply about their students' education and their students.

Well, I know we have to introduce ourselves and write a little about ourselves so here it goes...

I'm a psych major I've always been fascinated by the human mind and body so that's pretty much passion. When I have spare time I like to read true crime and murder mystery novels and I love to write poetry too. As a candy addict at my house there's always plenty of treats in every candy bowl. I believe one day my candy loving ways will one day be my demise, but until then keep those gummies, loli pops, chocolates, and other sugar packed goodies coming! I'm kinda a music junkie since I'm usually glued to my iPod rocking out if not texting, or both for that matter. Been a Nirvana fan since the age of 2 (My aunt used to listen to them so I grew up with the music). Yay Grunge!!

    Mark: To answer your questions...

#1 How much acting will we be doing?
We did not do acting last semester, so this is new. I don't think we will be doing a lot of acting due to the short time we have in class.

#2 How much reading will be assigned? (I'm not really an avid reader so this is an important thing for me.)
The reading will only be a story or two a week. Expect 10 pages, maybe less, and sometimes more. The reading is not bad though.

#3 How hard of a grader is Mr. Hsiao?
Prof. Hsiao is not a hard grader. Keep up with the reading, participate in class, and go on the field trips and you will be fine. Also try and start early on the papers so you can get help on them.

#4 For you "repeat offenders", What is so special about Mr. Hsiao class that brings you back to him? Maybe give examples of experiences you have had in the class or with him.
This is my second time taking Prof. Hsiao's class. I took English 110 (Critical Thinking) last semester at Golden West. He is one of the only teachers I know of that actually cares about his students. If he had another means of money, I bet he would teach for free. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Unlike some professors he will actually help you. I had problems with organization on my papers last semester, so I sent him my paper and he gave me pointers.

Mark you picked a great teacher. Enjoy the class!

I want to say I am so sorry for not answering your email in a timely manner. Let me explain :) My baby sister recently started back school, and needed a computer. 74. To Carmen, a long-time ago, I took a writing course and I had a "writer's block", myself. Now, I can write almost anything at my age, maybe because I experienced a whole lot in my life, but don't get me wrong, I'm no where near being an average writer, but there no better time then now in Proffessor Hsiao's class to start practicing and then we will see, at the end of the semester how much we have improved.

I'm beginning to believe in this class, not so much for the many blogs about this class, but being able to be comfortable within myself in this class means something. For now, my mind set is to first, communicate; be able to communicate and second, to be able to write and share with others in the form of communication.

Moreover, blogging is like free writing on a piece of paper, but when technology in motion, a computer is a great tool in communication, love it! enjoy it! I've already got great feedback from other bloggers. I don't think anyone in this class will be clueless when it comes to this class. On to my next blog...:-)

    Journal Reflection

"Reflections on Photograhy", by Roland Barthes

I've read all three readings assigned to us and we are to pick one. I have to say that trying to get a sense of the reading is at times frustrating to me; my thought gathering is puzzling. However, I do not know about other student in my class, but I have to read these reading tw, three, times before I can actually comprehend; maybe appreciate the message with in a message...etc, in which the author is conveying to the reader.

Thus, I enjoyed reading the "Reflection of Photography", by Roland Barthes. No offense to the other suggested reading but I just enjoy Photography. A photo when expressed by an individual is a prevailing and power significance when expressed with such admiration and or sorrow. In this reading, I was touched by the passage, "photographs of a being before which one recalls less of that being than by merely thinking of him or her" (1) a photograph is merely an image on sight but but if you go deeper into the thought process it becomes a moving image in your mind.

For now, I would have to say that this reading is poignant with absolute sorrow of an individual who is not exactly mourning for the mother but life entirely; enduring suffering, pain and maybe regret. This is not definitely my final thought but we will see on my next journal blog of this reading.

I finally figured out how to post my blog in the right place. Anyways, I guess since this is my greetings post, I will tell you a bit about my self. I am contemplating whether to be an English or psychology major, but I know whatever I decide to be will involve lots of reading and writing. I will read just about anything, but lately I have been drawn towards dystopian novels. Writing expository pieces is my specialty, but perhaps this extended blogging assignment will boost my creativity. Besides these past times, listening to music is a daily habit of mine. My taste is pretty eclectic: ambient, breakbeat, rhythm and blues, and of course, hip hop. Alright blog world, that's a wrap!

lol I had posted eight blogs and have not introduced myself. Here we go...I born in Honolulu, Hawaii. I lift Hawaii with family to Los Angeles, CA when I was 5 years old. Don't ask me why we lift the "Paradise" but we did:-( I graduated from Wilson High School in Los Angeles in 1987; most of you were probably not born and Professor Hsiao was still in grade school lol.

I joined the military; served in the US Navy as a SEAL Navy Corpsman. My occupation was tested during the first Gulf War when I deployed with Seal Team 1 and later Seal Team 3 based in Coronado. Although the life in the military was challenging to me, I felt I was being shelfish towards my family and friends; they missed me very much and the uncertainty of coming out of the Gulf was just that "uncertain".

I can no longer take the cries the pleading from my family and the letters hoping that I come back from a war that is not going anywhere but bring mortality and misery in a country that have no structure. With that being said, I decide to opt out of the military. Worked for the government as a medical technician and later became a computer systems coordinator for the next 19 years, again most you were not even born lol. During that 19 years, I've attended college in Saddleback College and Pasadena City College.

Six months ago, I decided to retire early, real early and the government offered me a vocational program to return to school, transfer to Long Beach State and hopefully get my degree in Management/Computer Information Systems in Business Administration and after all that, return to work if desired:-) I just may stay retired, I enjoy spending time with my two year old daughter. Kaitlyn is the best thing that ever happen in my life and I wouldn't change it in anyway.

My hobbies are doing outdoor activities, such as, mountain biking, hiking, camping and kayaking. This year, I'm going to take up snowboarding, yeah! Other hobbies that I am into is acrylic painting; everyone should try someday, because the stroking of the brush and the steadiness help the mind relax. One of my favorite painters is Pablo Picasso. I am not a womanizer like him but his paintings can tell a great deal of his deep thoughts and it is quite interesting.

I also enjoy photgraphy, I'm no professional but I do know how to manipulate the photos like Ansel Adams; he is one of my favorite photographers.

My favorite music is Mode Music also called electronic music of the eighties, such as Depeche Mode, Cure, OMD, etc...my era and I do miss the good times as a teenager, wild hair cuts, reeboks, tapered jeans and all lol.

Well back to business, I hope I covered everything. Question, are we able to post photos in this blog besides our profile? Let me know, I got some photos to show you:-)

    At Dan A.K.A Daber

Wow! It takes a very strong person to do what you are doing Dan. One of the reasons I'm here at cerritos after 10 years is because several times I opt out to make money. Money always came first. My view in life was that you could not have anything if you did not have money. So friends, family love was all secondary. I quickly found myself making great money, but it wasn't long before I realized that I was not enjoying the virtues of life. I acknowledged that one I would want to have a family. I asked myself that if I was to bring a family into this world, would it be fair to them to put them through such conditions. You can provide a family with all the fine things in life but one thing that comes above all is love.
About a year ago I went on a church retreat with my 9 year old godson. On this retreat one of my most memorable moments was when the priest told a true story. He told the group of adults that when he has asked those in the process of passing,if they would have done anything different, the answer is always that they wished they had spent more time with their families.
Stay strong Dan It is all worth it. It is obvious you are loved and appreciated by your family.

To Jay, I do appreciate your feedback, it is very encouraging to have fellow students who can relate. Money is not everything if we are not happy and honestly, I'm very happen in my current situation. Caution to the younger folks, finish school, it will be rewarding to you when you see yourself with a career that you enjoy and see yourself moving up.

It's much harder to move up but I did it through hard work; it was not easy and you have to know someone to do so at times. Then for a number of years later, I stopped moving up because I cannot justify (education wise) to move up. The old way of moving up become of age and that is practical, on the job training. Nonetheless, the younger folks don't be tempted by a job offer just because you want your independents and financial freedom from your parents, because you will one day regret it.

I feel like a grand-pa to you all but this is wisdom of many years of learning the hard facts of life, for me at least. Thanks again Jay. Hopefully we can team up when we form our group. I maybe outspoken on the web but it's different when meeting people, I'm very too myself if no one knows me.

Have a great weekend folks, see you all on Wednesday when it is raining cats and dogs lol

Ok first all shout out to Adrian HELLO =] you are missed in class

Ok now back to business well to be honest i picked this new reading beacuse dam the other ones are really a pain in the brain especially Homonyms. My respects to those that get it on the first time they read it. So here is my point on view on,
"Reflections on Photography" Camara Lucida by Roland Barthes:

First I think is important to take a loook at the tittle. To me the tittle gives us a hint of what the story is going to be about. The title Camara Lucida is talking about that a camera was able to capture or do something perfect or unique.I then move to the first paragrapgh, what got my eye is the mentioning of the month November. Why because November is the season of Fall where DEATH leafs fall from the trees. I connected this to a lost of someone. Also in the first paragraph he is giving his point of view on photograpghy. He mentions that one through photos can see how that person is or was, but that he does not see it that way. He thinks that some photos do not show how that person truly was. And he learn that harsh truth that photos can only give a little/ fake glimce of how that person was. Second paragraph to me is telling us what his searching. Which is to find that real image of his mother that he has of her. Third Paragrapgh is a good detailed/describtion of that one photo that he was looking for and also gives like a little glimce of the past of what happened with his grandparents. Fourth Paragraph he is describing her mother. The real her how he remember her and how he saw her through his eyes. And thats what the picture captures because that's how she stayed until she died. I also think that in this paragraph he admires her kidness.Fifth Paragraph, this whole paragraph talks about his feelings that were brought out because of this photo. How this one photo is different from all the rest beacuse it has capture what he was looking for, the righ memory of his mother.

And this is were im stopping cuz i want to have something to say in class and also because i do not know if im right lol. But all of you guys if you feel that you disagree with me call me out. Because that's how is going to be in class, so i'll be a little preview or just help me fix my mistakes on what i missed or intrepet wrong =]

The Allegory of the Cave by Plato

Let me begin by saying that my first reading of AOTC left me more confused than when I tried to read the Bible without my father's assistance. However, after I read the story over a couple more times it began to remind me of a conversation I had with my father. This became further evident to me when, in reference to the shadows the cave dwellers see, Socrates says "to them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images."(line 13) My father once said something close to this in reference to his days growing up in Mexico.

My father grew up in a part of Mexico where most of the inhabitants didn't finish school, and he explained to me how he grew up in ignorance because of this. In a way, the town in which my father grew up was his cave. Much like the cave dwellers in Plato's story the people my father grew up with developed their own interpretations of things they did not understand, such as the way a radio works or a television. Later once he left the town and moved to Los Angeles he told me he was overwhelmed by everything there was. I was reminded of this part of our conversation when Socrates says “first he will see the shadows best, next the reflections of men and other objects in the water, and then the objects themselves.” (line 21) When my father arrived in Los Angeles he was shocked to find how different life was. He was even more shocked to find that the explanations the people of his town made for how television and radios worked were false. He slowly became accustomed to life here in Los Angeles. The reason my father shared this story with me was to bring me comfort about returning to school. He explained to me that it might be overwhelming at first because I had never attended college, but that I too would become accustomed to school just as he became accustomed to living here in Los Angeles. Like the cave dweller, my father had escaped his own cave and slowly became accustomed to the new city. I’m not sure if I took the story to literally or if I just wanted to relate the story to the conversation I had with my father, but doing so sort of inspired me to step out of my cave, my cave of fear.

  89. ♥My Thoughts and Impressions♥

As I begin looking over the readings assigned by Professor Hsiao, I notice that every single reading is philosophically dense. To be honest I am not a fan of these types of readings. A sigh of relief evades me as I find myself pondering the idea of assaying the readings in class and later saturating them with meaning and logical sense as it applies to my life. I will be writing about “Reflections on Photography” Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes for I have previously read “The Allegory of the Cave” by Plato and “Homonyms” by Giorgio Agamben.
The essay begins with Roland sorting through photographs of his mother with the purpose of gathering information with the hope of someday having enough to write a compilation of his deceased mother only for his eyes to read. As he is looking at the photographs you can sense some disappointment for none of the photographs as of yet “speak” to him or have become alive to him. “There I was, alone in the apartment where she had died, looking at these pictures of my mother…looking for the truth of the face I had loved” (Barthes 2) .None of the photographs seem to depict his mother as she was in Barthes eyes. All the photographs displayed her identity but not her being and this left Barthes unsatisfied.
Barthes finally finds a seemingly ancient photograph which dates back to the year 1898 which shows his mother at the ripe age of five years old. I believe that Barthes is fixated on this image for it shows the many virtues and characteristics that encompassed his mother. This photograph displays her naïve manner, gentleness, kindness, and innocence that she was able to maintain throughout her lifetime.
When Barthes was going through the different photographs made me think of all the stages and phases that we, as human beings go through and how we attach emotion/feelings to photographs and in turn become “ photographic memories”. Photographs tend to create an illusion and a lot of the times photographs do not contain the truth (the true identity
)of the person we knew. The truth tends to live in your memories of the person or thing that once was and you should learn to cherish that vision/memory. The ending on the essay seems dismal. Barthes concludes by saying that time does not heal all wounds and that he lost so much more than a photograph can produce. Losing his mother goes beyond losing her image for he lost her being and her soul. He lost the irreplaceable and although he will learn to live without his mother his life is lived without quality...without purpose.

Hello to all my fellow classmates. Just wanted to share with all of you my first moments in Mr. Hsiao's class. After reading the syllabus and listening to the instructions expectations I felt a little sense of butterflies in my stomach, class looks hard and the expectations are very hard. I am going to take this as a challenge for me and I will be dedicated to the class and hopefully I pass. Hopefully we could all help each other and be a family like Mr. Hsiao mention so the class could be easier and fun!

Hello everyone. As I am looking at these posts, I realize that I did my first one incorrectly. This has been a bit confusing for me as I don't know how to really navigate blog pages. I hope Mr. Hisao is really patient about these things because I'm technologically impaired (among other things).

I look forward to being in this class despite the minor blogging challenges. Everyone I've met so far has been friendly and nice.

I think I'm on my eleventh blog; I'm starting to lose track lol. Nonetheless, to Carmen, believe me I was very intimidated by the class itself more or less the syllabus, but if you really think about it, there's a lot of blog samples that is quite helpful and encouraging to all of us.

If you read and read over the syllabus, it can help you get through the class writiing, unfortunately, we all have to face our very fears and publicly speak in this class; I took speech and through the middle of the semester I got comfortable with the instructor and the class, thus, I'm hoping that I can get very comfortable in this class sooner then later, because I'm ready to challege those same challeges I had in Speech.

I guess it depends on the class and how respectful we are and encouraging for one another, if we don't get that feeling, we are in for a long ride and it is not going to be fun.

Please class encourage your classmates and make this a fun class!

Hello everyone! It seems very late to post a greeting now, but I have been trying to figure out this whole blogging thing. I have noticed by reading the posts that most of us feel the same way, but I am definitely willing to learn, especially from those who have taken Professor Hsiao before. I am actually quite excited about this class because Professor Hsiao seems very dedicated into improving his students' skills. I am really tired of taking classes JUST to earn credit and JUST to fulfill requirements. On the other hand, I am honestly not looking forward to the workload. I am sure it is not rocket science! Haha but I hope Professor Hsiao knows that for most of us, this is not our only class that needs to be handled :) Anyhow, I am looking forward to working with everyone ! Have a great semester.

Sometimes we can get so caught up with things that don't matter as we are crippled by our own vision. We see only the near future, a day or two from today. We set goals so far we loose touch, we make plans for the material and forget about the flesh. It isn't until one day that one wakes up hoping it was just a dream, hoping one could capture that moment once again, just to express love or to simply say thank you.

I like to comment on "Reflection"; part of what we need to write about for one of the three readings. Reflection gives time to return to was good in our life and or thoughts of what was pitiable or underprivileged (lacking for better words, maybe?)...lately, I was reflecting on what was deprived in my life and that was a good education. For many years, I felt deprived of going to college because I choose to be indepedent so young in life; seeking financially freedom was more of a priority (it seems), but I felt that being independent came with bad choices and regret. Did I really have financial freedom? not what I expected. Did I have independence, certainly; it could be better if I waited.

I enjoyed going to school and I wanted continue to go to college but I had personal issues that changed the way I have been living till now...to keep a long story short, if I had finished school earlier, my life would have been different in a good way; in a satisfied way. I would have been married sooner, I would have been successful half the time or less, and I would be working in a job that I was very happy with, right now.

On the hand, reflection can start now, when I had made the right choice to go back to school with a degree, being happier and being successful. Needless to say, with everything all said and done, I do not regret having a very beautiful family of my own.

I hope my mind can be as free as me writing in this blog site when I start free writing in class and speaking in class, "Oh help me get through this"! lol See you folks in class.

My interpretation of Allegory of the cave was that of mental liberation. The chained people are narrow minded people or those whose thoughts have been trained. Their free thoughts are held captive by stereotypes, superstitions, religion etc. Because of these mental constraints, they are incapable of seeing the world for what is truly is or what it is not. In their current state liberation is impossible. When unchained, they are freed from mental bondage yet some may neglect enlightenment, clinging on to their old way of thinking and willingly put back on their chains. When forced into the light or become knowledgeable of truths they new nothing of, they may be skeptical. Familiar lies may be more comforting than foreign truth. Adjusting to the truth or being enlightened will be problematic initially. "...will he not have a pain in his eyes which will make him turn away...""

    To several intimated fellow classmates.

    "On Intimidation"

Intimidation, one can say that intimidation is one's own fear of failure. Fear that goals and expectations set by others are set above one’s potential. Should one be concerned of goals set upon one by others knowing what one’s potential is? Or should one simply strive to go above one’s own potential? The true judge of one’s success is one, so why be so concern of failure in the sight of others?
One’s true competition is one self’s potential. So whether one succeeds or fails truly the only judge that matters is one.

    * I am re-posting this entry due to the fact that I forgot to post it in the proper format. I unknowingly omitted pertinent information e.g name, class, college and post number*

Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” primarily describes the journey to self discovery in a world where tricks and ignorance rule the world. Initially, the prisoners are held captive by chains that are so deep in love, barring them from understanding even the possible advancement of enlightenment. They are plagued by ignorance and even ignorant of their ignorance. The prisoners are not aware of their true being and purpose since they only see shadows of all that lies in the dark cave. Once a prisoner is unshackled and is able to turn round his head, his eyes will set upon the sun, or the realm of enlightenment, and be ironically blinded by its glare. The prisoner will be uncomfortable, confused, and dazzled all at once, similar to the emotions evoked by discovering a piece of oneself. While the prisoner mulls over whether his former reality or this new reality is legitimate, the truth clearly manifests once “his eye is fixed” (43), or becomes adjusted to the newfound light. Plato signifies this moment of enlightenment by when “he will be able to see the sun…he will see him in his own proper place…and he will contemplate him as he is” (23-24). Upon returning to the cave of ignorance to explain the deep depths of awareness, the redeemed prisoner will most likely be misunderstood and ridiculed by those still confined by their chains. Plato ends his allegory by establishing that enlightenment only comes with resolution and the significant role it plays in living rightly.

Okay...so i was looking for my first post...and i cant find it? :( sad day. ANYWAYS...it was the welcome post...and i liked it haha.

    SO...
    about "reflections on photography"

I liked this reading. I love photography, and it really hits my heart when a picture captures a moment of beauty. I love looking at old photos and remembering the exact moment that the picture was taken. I like that the author said that sometimes when you are looking for a specific moment in time it is not as easy to find as you think it will be, but when you find it after looking for a long time, it really hits you hard, and you hold that picture close to your heart. I love when he talks about the picture of his mother, and how much it touched his heart. The saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" is so true. Nothing speaks to you like a picture does, especially when it is a picture of someone you love that is not there anymore. Whether it be a friend or family member that has passed away, or someone who is just not around anymore, a picture of them can bring up all sorts of feelings. Pictures can bring tears, happiness, feelings of love, joy, anger, and really anyother feeling you can have. All in all, i liked the reading, and can relate to it on a certain level.

The Allegory of the the Cave" by Plato, gave me some insight about humanity's lifestyle. We live in a world that is govern by authorities that set regulations expected to be followed, and naively believed. Plato explains that the prisoners were, "prevented by the chains from turning their heads" (Plato 1). It is complex to discover what the truth really falls under. That is the cause of human society living like "prisoners." Through ignorance, people blindly follow something that does not have true meaning. There are only a few who escape the chains of falsification in this world by "looking towards the light" (Plato 15). The strong are the only individuals that are able to see this light. Eventhough that individual attempts to rescue the rest, he/she cannot; because the prisoner's darkness prevented them from understanding the truth. Therefore, each individual has to have the desire to see what lies beyond the cave to escape the chains.

    Hello to Everyone!

I hope everyone is enjoying the rain. I am usually a person who loves the rain, and windy weather. Today I felt kind of sad, because I sat and thought about all of those that do not have a home. On my way home from work I seen what appeared to be a homeless person laying by a tree wrapped in a plastic bag. My heart dropped. I then reached my warm home (thank god the heater was left on by accident), and thought about how fortunate I am to have a sheltered place to come home to. I then took two of the throw blankets that I have had in my linen closet for over a year, and stopped by a local starbucks to pick up a venti hot chocolate. I drove another block to the location where I had spotted the homeless person, and saw him snuggled under a covered bus bench. I got out of my car, and handed him the items. I also told him "I wish I could do more." He told me "no sweetheart you are a blessing." Though I felt better with him having something warm to put into his stomach along with two blankets, I still felt so helpless. This reminded me of the reading we did last year. Jo Goodwin Parker , in "What is Poverty," says,"Others like me are all around you"(Paragraph 14). How true is this statement. I see so many homeless people it seems like the help that is needed is impossible. .......Just wanted to take a moment out of my day to vent!

Hey, I was thinking the same thing. While I was sitting in front my t.v. playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, I was thinking about all the people and animals who didn't have a roof over their head during the heavy rain. The thoughts occurred when I looked over at my little dog sitting beside me sleeping like a baby. I just kept saying to him "Dude, you're a lucky dog man! A lot of your buddies are out in the cold rain without a roof over their heads and you get to sleep like a baby. You even get free food and the only thing you do around the house is poop and pee." I really hope everyone who is unfortunate to have a roof over their head stays warm during these rainy days.

oh my goodness gracious SO i go to the school clinic right (which i highly reccommend everyone to go especially those who dont have health insurance because i dont insurance and the school clinic is just so awesome!)
i went because i have been breaking out on my face and neck at a constant lately and it was worrying me SO i went on wednesday?? maybe thursday?? no it was wednesday and they said that its just adult acne and the nurse patricioner (im guessing and hoping thats how you spell it) prescribe me this neutrogena oil free acne cleanser right...
i used it for two days...washed my face a total of four times using this product...thinking it wasnt working because im used to my st. ives apricot scrub...anyway it cleared my acne away from my chin, neck and temples...BUT this isnt no commercial...the bastard cleanser freaken burned my face...like saturday night i was with my parents and boyfriend watching a movie at the house and my face started itching...and i felt irratation and slight burning...i thought i was allergic to something i had just ate right but then i remembered buying that new gay face product and i was like what the heck man!?
so all night saturday and sunday and im sure tonight will itch like crazy again and my face is slightly red and feels like a freaken crocodile skin its sooo rough...im constantly puting lotion to relieve, and hydrate my skin (it also helps not to scratch) and ive been without makeup these past two days and i might be without makeup coming wednesday...SO the point of detailing this info to you is not to promote the school clinic and its not becuase i enjoy sharing my stories but because i want you to bare with my strawberry (as my friend teased me) make-upless face when you see me at school
back to school work...i will read the stories right now and blog on them

    To Diana Leon,

I am sure you have heard lots of feedback from former students regarding you wanting to drop the class. Girly do not do it. I know the feeling. I signed up for Mr. H's class after being out of school for almost 3 years, and my first day was dreadful. I thought I lacked the fundamentals that were needed in order to be a good student. I did not know how I was going to balance such an intense class, and still work 2 jobs. I pulled through, and met alot of great people. I met Jenny who helped me out, and that is what we are all here to do...help out. Do not get discouraged...I am actually in his evening class, but am always open to help. My email is kittencathrina@yahoo.com You will gain so much from the class. Every assignment is given for a reason. So, please hang in there. you are in a great class with so many others that are willing to help. All you have to do is ask!

    Journal Reflection

"Reflections on The Allegory of the Cave", by Plato

Okay, so I have read all three short stories and the one that captures my interest the most is "The Allegory of the Cave". The best way I can currently express my relation to it is by writing the following.

An event takes place every so many years. In this event those with little or no power are given the illusion of selecting those into power. In such dark system those who claim to have power will determine the life of those with less power (the weak). The weak are programmed into a system of constraints, suppressed by an imaginary system of rules and laws. In this dark system even the dreams of the weak are predetermined. Constraints set by the weak amongst themselves due to the lack of will to question or challenge. Constraints accepted as the norm as the weak lack vision of organized power in this darkness as those in power guide the weak through life.

Plato's "the Allegory of the Cave."

I began reading this and thought... "Wow, what a great story this is going to be!" I loved the beginning paragraph. It was written in detail, I could picture the scenario as i read along.
Then as I continued on my facination, I got a little lost, and then more and more lost. This text began to confuse me. I felt overwhelmed. If this was the first we'd have to read, what were the others going to be like? Yet, I didn't stop reading. I finished the story and gathered as much out of it as I could.
AOTC is a huge question. A question to me and other readers of how one percieves philosophy. In my mind, philosophy is my view of the world and all that is in it. Socrates continues to enlighten Glaucon by illustrating the story by asking questions. I suppose my cave would be my childhood, my chains are my memories, and my light would be death. I believe that's what Plato wanted us to ponder. What our cave would be, where our truth and logic lie, and the foundation of our perceptions. If we were to be set free, would I know nothing of it because all I've seen are the shadows. "To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images." (AOTC by Plato: Line 13)

    To Grace Kim:

Hey Grace, I really enjoyed reading your interpretation of Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave." I can see clearly that you've understood the text. Ignorance is destructive, especially one ignorant to the truth. You stated that Self discovery was the main focus of AOTC, I agree. The discovery of what is truth and the personification of your own image. Are we so different than the ones who imprison us? If light were to hit our physical being, wouldn't we be the shadows? I liked how your intrpretation made me realize this. Thank you!

Left me start off by saying, it is great getting to read everyones writing. I believe that all of you have something to teach me, so I enjoy this. I love to read what other people have to say, I believe it's because I am starting to become interested in writing. However, I do not enjoy my own writing. I never believe it is good enough, which is another reason I am excited for this class. I would also like to thank Janice for the friendly text. I have exchanged information in other classes, but never used it or had anyone use mine. It is reassuring to know that there is not only the teacher but several students doing their best efforts to help make sure we take away from this class.

Oh, and if any of you have some free time and are looking for another blog to follow, I am recommending this one. In my personal opinion I think this man has a lot to say, and a very interesting way of doing so. http://pleasefindthis.blogspot.com/

    Reading in the Rain

First of I want to publicly apologize to Arrio for putting him on blast on the blogosphere as English 102's "very own Edward look-a-like". Although you wrote that it was not a big deal, I still felt I should apologize. No "blood", no foul.

Give me a second to gather my emotions......

    Ok. I am good now.

Last semester we read "AOTC" and "Homonyms" and I have to admit that both those reads kicked my intellectual arse. I remember having to read them more than a few times to try and capture everything that Plato and Agamben were trying to express. It comes as no surprise that "Camera Lucida" by Roland Barthes has had the same effect on my intellectual arse.

I have yet to lose someone close to me. All my grandparents have passed away but I only vaguely remember my father's father and that is mostly because he came to visit us from Ecuador during the summer of 1997. I dread the day, though inevitable, when one of my parents or siblings will die. I read "Camera Lucida" and think about how it will be when I go back through my family's photo albums searching for, as Barthes wrote, "photographs that speak" (1).

What Barthes is writing about however, goes beyond just finding a picture of his mother that simply reminds him of her in her heyday. He was searching for a photograph that captured the essence of his mother. The true person within. It is interesting to see that he found that in a picture of his mother as a child. Barthes writes, "There I was, alone in the apartment where she had died, looking at these pictures of my mother, one by one, under the lamp, gradually moving back in time with her, looking for the truth of the face I had loved." (2). In the photograph of his mother as a child is where he "rediscovered" her. He goes on to talk about how, in the image, he discovers his mother's innocence and gentleness. He calls the image of the Winter Gardens a "just image"(4). I hope we can all find an image that can justify the truth behind ourselves and our loved ones.

    Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes

WOW Mr.H, this was another heartfelt reading. I know understand why you wanted me to read this story. This reading I knew would be difficult personal wise for me. The first sentence carried the words, "shortly after my mother's death". This sentence sent chills up my spine, and only because my biggest fear in life is losing and having to live without my mother. Most are fortunate to have the fear of flying or of spiders, because these are fears that they can escape from. My fear I cannot escape, it is a fear I know one day I will have to come encounter with. As said by Roland Barthes in Camera Lucida, “I could live without the Mother as we all do, sooner or later” (p7). It is a fact that in normal circumstances our parents have to go before we do. I just do not understand what magical plan God has in store for me to pull me through such a tragedy. I get sad just thinking about the whole thing. I connected with the reading instantly. Right now I look at pictures, and relate them only to specific dates. For example, our last family Christmas pictures are distinguished by the color of the tree in the background. I do not recollect as to how the tree got decorated, or the time my sister and I spent decorating the tree. To me at this point these are “just pictures”. I then take into heart this reading, and realize how selfish I sound. I am using these pictures, and I mean LITERALLY using these pictures. I am using them to hold onto a memory I will one day want to look back on to reminisce, so that I can gain back the feeling that particular day created for me. I am not giving the picture its full credit. The picture holds more than just an object and people in its 4x6 frame. The picture holds a connection, because it ties me back to that specific time that was spent with my loved ones. The picture gives off a sense of comfort, and warmth. I cannot wait to get deep into this assignment. I think this one will be the best, and the most personal.

Well what Audrey said about Mr. Hsiao's class being a challenge....its pretty much true. but don't get scared now...i mean if me and Audrey we able to survive these past tree semesters...im sure you guys will:)when i first came into Mr. hsiao's class i was terrified but then i met Audrey and thing became so much more fun. as of what Audrey mentioned in her greeting how mr hsiao's class becoming a family..that is literally true. we will become a family give it till the third week of class and by that time we will all be excited to go to our English class. like Audrey mentioned she is loud and not embarrassed to be herself. that is the greatest thing about mr. hsiao's class there's no walls and not a lot of things are held back....we are so comfortable in class that it is very easy to just be ourself. the last thing that Audrey mentioned was the fact that if anyone needed help just to holla... well that is most important because you can ask for help with homework, studying for the final, or even things that are bothering you at home..in mr hsiao's class were more than just students in a class we are FAMILY.:)

After reading all three stories I was more interested in one Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes. I know it that losing a person is really hard especially since I lost my grandmother 10 months ago. At first it was hard for me to even see he pictures because just knowing that I will never be able to hold her is really hard. But after a few months after her death I was looking at her most resent picture and they tell me so many thing about her. Like Roland Barthes wrote “It is said that that mourning, by its gradual labor, slowly erases pain; I could not. I cannot believe this; because for me, Time eliminates the emotion of loss (I do not weep), that is all. (p7) I believe that is true in a way because when we just lose somebody it is really hard but after I few month we manage to let go of the pain that we have for are lost.

    "Reflections on Photography"

Death is something that is feared by everyone. So when you loose somebody to death, you feel as if you had gone with that person. It is difficult to continue living life as if nothing ever happened. In Camera Licida by Roland Barthes he found a way to deal with the death of his mother. By him reflecting his thoughts on old and happy pictures of his mother, he was able to deal with the problem. He said, " ... all this had transformed the photographic pose into that untenable paradox which she had nonetheless maintained all her life: the aseertion of gentleness."(p3)With this picture he was able to focuse on his mothers beauty and gentleness and have her once again alive, in his head.
Loosing someone is very difficult to deal with. Last year i lost two important people in my life: my great grandmother and a close friend to me. I didnt get a chance to attend my grandmothers funeral because she live in Mexico. I have a picture of us hugging in my room. She has such a beautiful smile. Whenever I see this picture it takes me back to that time in Mexico where we would sit down and just talk about nothing. Remenicing on the beautiful time we had together.
Out of the three stories that i read i believe this was one of the better one. One, because I was able to relate to it and two because everything he said was true.

Hello everyone. Should have posted this a week ago but here I go now. First day of Mr. Hsiao's class was nothing really surprising. I had a friend that took professor Hsiao before so he told me all about the class. I took English 100 with an easy professor and felt like I did not learn anything about writing so hopefully this class turns out a bit better. So a little about me now...after high school, I decided to put college on hold and decided to work instead. After two years I decided to come back to school and get my BA. I really hope I can be a better writer through this class and i hope to get to know everyone else better

"Reflections on Photography" Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes

I watched The Lovely Bones the other day and this story seems to go hand in hand with the movie. Barthes talks about his mothers death and how he tries to look for a picture that captured the true essence of her being. In The Lovely Bones the main character takes pictures of herself and after she dies her love ones see these pictures and remember that at that moment she was alive and happy. I don't know if the two connect but they did for me.Barthes continues to search for a photograph that will show her essence. Barthes comes across a few photos of her but none have what he is looking for. "I was sorting , but none seemed to me really "right": neaither as photographic performance nor as living ressurection of the beloved face" (P1). What he was looking for is for the picture of the persons qualities and by qualities it does not neccessarily mean physical. Anyone could remember a face but what is importent is remembering a persons character. He finally stumbles upon a picture in which her mothers essence is captured. Ironically, the picture is of her as a child which reflects her innocence and gentleness which were two qualities that his mother had. All in all it was a good piece.

Well this is supposed to be my second post and I think i was supposed to comment on another persons post? yeah well from what i been reading everyone seems super chill and it seems like it'll be a cool class. I'm one of the few people that don't really use facebook, myspace, or twitter so "blogging" does feel a little bit awkward. Maybe that's why I've been waiting until the last minute to do it. Anyways I hope i get used to this whole blogging thing.

    "Reflections on photography"

I thank my lord that I have not had to go through the emotions of losing someone you love, to death. Except for one Elizabeth Saldana; my best friend's mother. She was not just my friend's mother... she was closer to me then most of my blood relatives have been. I have known my best friend since first grade. Her mother, Elizabeth, past away when we were in eight grade after a long battle against cancer. My best friend did not have family in th U.S... except me and my family. I remember spending every summer night by her mother's bed side, tending to her needs. Then one day I decided to change the routine... I went to my cousin's house. That evening Liz passed away; I never got to say "good-bye". Until this day I feel that way.

In Roland Barthe's "Reflections on a Photograph" Camera Lucida, Barthes explains his experience of losing his mother and his dealing with the grief. Barthe's essential idea in his writing is ... " I was going through some photographs. I had no hope of "finding" her (Par. 1). At first I thought how is he not going to find her? And then it came to me... he probably means that he is not going to capture the essence of his mother though a picture.

Barthe then found the picture which he called " A Winter Garden", which ... " maintained all her life: the assertion of gentleness" (Par. 3). Barthes had finally found a picture that suited the character of his mother, it was not just her image.

Although I do not know what it is like to lose a mother, I know the feeling it is to lose someone and not knowing how to let go. I think that if my friend and I were able to have a "true" photograph of her mother, it would be easier for us to move on.

I agree with David. Just like him, I had taken English 100 with an easy professor. So I didn't learn much about writing from that class. I just attended his class and went back home. I rather felt like I learned more from my English 52 class. I am hoping to learn more from this class and improve my English writing skills.
Prof. Hsiao seems cool and I hope we will have a wonderful semester. I like how people are responding to each other's comment.

    Welcome:
I know, we are already on the second week of class, and I am barely introducing myself! I put myself on the waitlist “just in case” I took this class, having taken it just last semester I knew what I would be in for, and was not sure I was ready to handle the “Hsiao Experience” so soon. Anyway, after much contemplation, I am officially in. Last semester, this class was more therapy than a requirement. I was able to overcome so many obstacles that I didn’t realize were holding me back. After each session, I actually felt more enlightened and spiritually stimulated (due to the assigned readings) than I did with my World Religions class. Well enough about the past and on with the present! I am 26 years old, about half way through with Cerritos, I have a 3 year old son, and a baby on the way. Me being pregnant was THE reason why I wasn’t sure I should take this class again, I told Mr. Hsiao that all the stress would put me in early labor. This class is definitely overwhelming at times, but in my opinion completely worth all the effort. I am glad to be back again with so many familiar faces around, as well as new faces, and I can’t wait to see what is in store for us this time around! And Sara (from 102), I agree with you about reading everyone else’s input. This was probably one of my favorite parts about this class, getting so many different perspectives on one subject.

    “Camera Lucida” by Roland Barthes
Nowadays, taking a picture is as easy as the click of a button. Though technology has made it easier to capture a moment, the outcome (the picture itself) has the power to speak for itself. The right picture can even leave one speechless, regardless of when/where it was taken. In “Camera Lucida,” Roland Barthes is going through pictures, trying to find her mother’s spirit in any one of them. It’s interensting that the picture in which he saw his mother, “the distinctness of her face, the naïve attitude of her hands,...her expression,... the figure of a sovereign innocence” (4), is when she was a little girl of five. He sees the true essence of her mother in her face as a child because this is the way he remembers her; not as a physical child, but as one who needed the love and care from another. As it happens many times when one’s parents reach old age, one then becomes their caretaker. His mother relied on him for nourishment and support, just as a child relies on his or her caretakers. Barthes is able to see his mother in this picture not as a physical being, but as a person whose soul trancends the body.

"Reflections on Photography" Camera Lucida by Ronald Barthes

Wow, all i can say is another incredible story assigned by Mr. Hsiao. Wow, Wow, Wow,and Wow, again. this story has caught my attention then all the other stories we have experienced and discussed in class. i cant wait to discuss about his story tomorrow. i want to here everyones stories relating to this story. i cant say that i relate to this story because i really have not lost any one though death. the only person that came to mind while reading this story is my "nino"(my godfather). this past winter break was kind of awkward because my Nina and nino got a divorce. i feel that i have lost my nino in a way because we have not been able to communicate as often as we did when they were still together. i feel so much sadness when i think of this because my nino was more than just my uncle he was like my 2nd father. i loved my nino so much i can say we were inseparable. well anyways giving the fact that they are going though a divorce right now things are different and i find my self going though old pictures wishing that those times would last forever. this story was beyond fascinating. what i love about this story the most is how the author provided so much detail into each line of every paragraph. in paragraph 2 Ronald Barthes says," The photograph was very old. The corners were blunted from having being passed into an album, the sepia print had faded, and the picture just managed to show two children standing together at the end of a little wooden bridge in a glassed-in conservatory....etc"(paragraph two lines 1&2) after reading though those two lines i was able to picture how the photograph looked and was able to picture the complete setting in my head. i guess i like the fact that i can read though this story and see the pictures in my head as i go along and i l love to read stories like that.

Allegory of the Cave by Plato
Reading through the stories, I seemed to find The Allegory of the Cave the most appealing. In this story Plato tries to explain to Glaucon how many or most people seem to view the world around them – as a place where they live and eventually die. Among all these people though arise some that chose not to accept that view and seek what is beyond the “cave” of conformity. This can be maybe the mere act of breaking away from the “everyday” as the prisoners might hypothetically have if they would have just try to escape from the chains being it the only thing between themselves and the rest of the world.
Another thing also would be the shadows and noises experienced by the prisoners which would represent that which cannot be seen but because of the traces these things leave behind can be acknowledged as something that exists. For example if we would to appear in a two dimensional world all the beings in that world would only see an infinitely thin slice of us and figure that’s how we look but it’s quite the opposite in our reality. The prisoners thought that what they were experiencing was their entire reality but as one prisoner found out it was only an infinitely small piece of what “reality” really was as Plato states, “To them”, “the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images” (13).

The Allegory of the Cave by Plato

“the prison-house is the world of sight, the light of the fire is the sun,… journey upwards to be the ascent of the soul into the intellectual world”(36)

The Allegory of the Cave is the story of a people that are imprisoned in a cave of darkness or metaphorically trapped in ignorance. There was one man that was allowed to leave the cave. He was to be brought out of the cave of ignorance and into the “light” to ascend his soul towards the intellectual world. However, the process of coming into the “light” is not easy. This requires that his eyes adjust to the light or his soul to be open to new ideas or concepts in order to make his ascension. After the process of learning and discovering, he is forced back into the cave of darkness. Now that he is no longer ignorant, the cave is different to him now. He no longer sees the way he had in the past. He does not see things as the other prisoners do, but the man sees things for what they really are. However, he is thought to be ridiculous by the other prisoners for they cannot grasp the things which this man sees. They even judge that “it was better not even to think of ascending” (34) to the light, so that they may stay in their ignorant bliss.

I liken this allegory to myself. I know that the phrase “coming into the light” can mean many things to many people. In my life it is kind of like my conversion to my religion.

I was born in the faith that I am still practicing today. However, I was ignorant or in the “cave of darkness” for most of my young life when it came to what I believed in spiritually. In this cave I was just living life, not knowing anything different. All of my needs were taken care of, I was happy with what little sight I had. I did however, begin to come out of that cave as I grew older and began to think for myself. I had to let my eyes adjust to the “light” or allow my soul to be open to new ideas or concepts. I like most teenagers went through a period of finding myself and I was very concerned with my spiritual well being. I studied many other religions as well as my own. I had to get to that “intellectual world” that Socrates spoke of because I had a very important decision to make in my life. In my faith men at the age of 19 years old are strongly encouraged to serve a 2 year mission teaching our beliefs to anyone who will listen. I originally thought that would mean I had to go back into the cave and the darkness from which I came. I did not want to disappoint my family however, I could not commit to this without seeing the light of the world and knowing for myself what I believed to be true. I achieved this through much studying and prayer and was able to bring myself out of my ignorance or into the light. I decided to go back to the cave from where I came. As I did, I noticed that it was not as I remembered. My eyes could see just fine, the darkness I encountered before had been lifted. This “cave of darkness” was not really dark at all. It was just my ignorant eyes or soul that was preventing me from being able to grasp what I was really seeing. People may think I’m ridiculous for going back into the “cave” but maybe it is they who need to come out of their own “cave” to find their own form of light before they make any judgment, which may be the one of the hidden meanings behind The Allegory of the Cave.

I was just going over your post, and have not found anyone who has seen that movie The Lovely Bones in addition to reading the book. I encourage everyone to see the movie, and if one has time...read the book. I totally agree with you Art the movie did go hand in hand with the book. I always think about where are loved ones are after they are gone. I think the movie brings a great reality in expressing the connection between the dead and the living. I did see some connection between that movie and our reading. That was a really good analysis.

    Barthes’ Camera Lucida

Barthes loved his mother very much. He wanted to find a photograph that could speak of his mother. He finally experienced the presence of his mother as his description, “gradually moving back in time with her, looking for the truth of the face I had loved” (2). The photograph was taken when his mother was five years old. The photographer was very professional to catch the characteristic of the little girl. However, it was the deep feelings of Barthes towards his mother that enabled him to trace the intrinsic value of “the little girl.” We value things, like photographs or buildings, because they can bring back our good time. For example, I often check the website of my former school although I know few people of the school now. The website brings me back to the happy time. Likewise, my friend’s mom still keeps his baby clothing for many ten years. In fact, what I and my friend’s mom treasure is the relationships with somebody, like the author. Relationship is the real treasure of our life, not money. Relationship makes a people alive in the memories of others after his life. The power of money will go when you consume them. We can live without relationship, according to Barthes, “but what life remained would be absolutely and entirely unqualifiable” (7).

I would like to respond to Mark Freeman's post#4. I appreciate very much Mark's attitude towards his faith. He have an open mind to explore other thoughts, and then decides to go back to his faith, his cave. So "his cave" is not a dark cave, but it is "his home" that he is familiar with. Faith cannot be real without examination; otherwise, it is blind faith.

“Reflections on Photography” Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes

A photograph could tell millions of stories and at the same time could not tell anything. The character in the story is looking at photographs that could tell him things about his deceased mother. Although he has no hope on “finding” (1) his mother, he kept looking for her. He already had a picture of her, but he could not accept the fact that the person in the picture was his mother. In the picture he “recognized her gait, health, glow” (1) but at the same time he could not recognize his mother’s face.

Finally he found the face he was looking for in a picture of his mother as a little girl. She was five in the picture. When I was reading the story I asked myself “how could he recognized his mother as a little girl if he never saw her that way?” but after reading the story over and over I finally understood that he only remembered his mother as a vulnerable being who needed someone who could take care of her. I started thinking that maybe his mother had been sick for a really long time and because of that he could not remember her as a strong healthy woman. In the photograph, his mother looks exactly as he remembers her with that innocent look on her face. He finally found the one picture that showed the face of his mother that he had loved so much.

I can relate more to this story that the other two because I understand when he says he could not recognize his mother’s face in the picture of the beach. Before I was born, my grandfather had a stroke. He went to therapy but he did not fully recover. He had trouble to walk and to talk. During my childhood he never played with me or did anything grandparents usually do. My cousins who knew him before the stroke told me stories about how he played with them. But when they showed me the pictures of him as a strong, healthy man, I could not recognize him. The person in the picture did not look like the person I knew as my grandfather.

Photographs allow us to go back in time and go through those romantic, funny, happy, sad moments of ones lives. Most people go through pictures to try to revive all those precious moments that only happen once in a lifetime.

    "Reflections on Photography"

Photographs are like stepping stones to the past. Photographs are special because they preserve the characteristics and emotions. You can virtually travel back into time by looking at a photograph. Roland Barthes uses great descriptive words in which causes me to almost recreate the image as if I have seen it before. The part that stands out the most for me is in paragraph 5 in which he says "During her illness, I nursed her, held the bowl of tea she liked because it was easier to drink from than from a cup; she had become my little girl, uniting for me with that essential child she was in her first photograph. When you were first born, you were a baby. As you grow older, you will finally reach your height or prime. In the years coming thereafter, you generally grow into the child you were once before. It is as if you are born into this world as a child and leave this world as a child.

    Reflection on Photography

When I went through all the stories, I found “Reflection on Photography” interesting and emotionally attached to human beings. We all miss our loved ones in some point of our life. In this story, Barthes uses photograph to refresh the memories of his dead mother.
I can relate to Barthes. Like the way he lost his mother, I lost my grandparents. I was very close with them and they raised me since me my childhood. Since they passed away, I only have their memories. I also go through their pictures and these images remind me my past days.
These pictures may be just an image to other people but it tells me about the characters of my grandparents. In this essay, Barthes says “The distinctness of her face, the naïve attitude of her hands…..the assertion of gentleness." when I look at the picture, the smile in the face of my grandmother reminds me her gentleness. She was gentle, caring and protective. Reading this story reminded me my grandparents and I felt we shared some kind of same feeling.

A huge relief because not one of my past eng. prof. ever discussed that problem. And the reminder that this class will definitely require more than just attending. Thanks again!!!

    To Celia and Janelle
Like Celia I was also scared when I went to Mr. Hsiao's first class. the class was very different than other english class I have taken. When he talked about blogging stuff I was completely lost. I instantly thought of quitting it, but I suddenly realised that this is my last semester here in cerritos college and I need this english class to transfer. So, I determined to take this class no matter what the consequences will be.
Reading everyone's post and especially post#2 of Janelle has made me optimistic about the class. Posting comment and blogging which seemed confusing in the first has already started connecting us with each other. And now,I am pretty sure we all are going to be a family as Mr. Hsiao said in his class.

"Reflection to Photography" Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes
This first sentence “Now, one November evening shortly after my mother’s death…..” (Line 1) reminds me about my beloved father who passed away two years ago. He was not only my father but also a close friend of mine. His sudden demise came as a shock to me. I had never imagined my life without him. I often miss my father, and go through his pictures. Even though, he is not physically in this earth, I feel that he is continuously watching me. Looking at his pictures always inspires me to be a good person. It always generates a feeling in my heart that, one day I have to make my father proud of me. The way Barthes look at his mother’s picture and the way I look at my father’s picture is different but, for both of us it is more than just an image. It shows how deeply and emotionally we are attached to our parents.

I am sufficiently confused about this whole blog thing. I posted a "greeting" but I'm not sure if it showed up, or if it was published at all. Also, it says that I have two blogs, but I'm pretty sure I only made one. I asked several people, and that just confued me even more. If I could get a little bit of help- the simplified version- that would be great.

The events occuring in Haiti are some of the most tragic I have ever witnessed. I saw some of the most gruesome images that I would rather not discuss, for it evokes the same emotions I experienced when I saw it first, and it reduced me to tears. Anyways, please send thoughts and prayers that way, and maybe even a little money if you can afford it. To all those who have fears about this class, do not be afraid, just be ready to work. It is not hard, there is just a lot of work, and if one stays on top of it, it is very manageable. You shall experience what every college classroom setting SHOULD feel like.

P Daza: I put a poem from the story in my comment? If I did I did not plan on it. Cool! LOL! Team Edward so with you there! Vampires!

Diana Leon: I'm glad you decided not to drop the class. I know it seems overwhelming at first, but it does get better. When I first took the class last semester I thought it was crazy how much work there is. Honestly though it is not that bad. It also helps that we do help each other with our papers. Keep up with the class, you'll enjoy it.

“Reflections on Photography” Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes

“If I were ever to show them to friends, I could doubt that these photographs could speak.” (P1)
Out of the three readings assigned the one I related to the most was Reflections because of the excellent job Barthes does in expressing a struggle to find a photograph of his mother that illustrates her true character. A picture can be deeply meaningful to a person; within a photo one can keep the memory of a loved being. I think that everyone has at one time looked at a photo of a special person and an automatic smile has popped up before even realizing it. Barthes mentions in the first paragraph that if he were to show his friends that picture, that that photo can speak to them as it to him. A picture can say many things, it can show love or fun, but finding a picture of a loved one that does justice to their character can be a blessing and a treasure. A person can live years with a loved one without ever really recognizing their special qualities, and it is only when something tragic happens that one is able to appreciate them. Having a photograph that speaks to an individual becomes priceless. I have never lost someone I really cared for, but reading this story has made me want to stop taking my loved ones for granted and appreciate them in the here and now. I think I am now going to look at pictures in a different way, and start framing the pics that portray the true nature of the special people in my life.

"Reflections on Photography" Camera Lucida by Ronald Barthes

The deep connection between family members who may or may not live together, share loving memories and suffer together is undeniably one of the most important relationships in someones life. Barthes explains the pain and weakness he's watched his mother suffer. Because of her weakness, the suffering was who she was and because of who she was, he lived with her. This picture that shows his mother as an innocent, gentle young girl was very different from the woman who needed help drinking tea. The weakness and the bad is what he remembers, but this picture shows someone very different. The memories that this picture brings back, reminds him of the "goodtimes" and the loving memories. I used to live with my grandma, until recently. She died last year and I find myself doing the same thing. Remembering her as she was before she died- weak and suffering. Then, looking at pictures where she is youthful and strong, happy and loving. I find these pictures as not "just an image, but a just image"(P3).

Post #4 (And many more to come)

Trying to decide what to write about was actually pretty simple, since I have already read "The Allegory of the Cave" and "Homonyms".

Quick question: I already read both of those stories, but I was wondering about "Homonyms". I think I already understand the meaning of the story, but I was not sure. The meaning is basically saying that while people thinking you belong to one group, you belong to your own group? Maybe I am not explaining what I mean all the way. If you can help, great. If not I will pay attention in class to see what everyone has to say about the story.

    Well here we go...

"Reflections on Photography" by Roland Barthes

I am still confused what "Camera Lucida" means, but I basically understand the rest of the story. I decided to write about this story since I enjoy photography. I am not great, but still. Photography captures a perfect moment on paper. In Roland Barthes, "Reflections on Photography," the author states, "...whose living reality I was experiencing for the first time, in an involuntary and complete memory" (5). When someone looks at a photo you imagine yourself in that moment. You look at person and see how they were feeling at that moment. In "Reflections on Photography" the author writes about the loss he feels for his mom and how a simple photo of his mom with her brother. With this simple photo the author is able to search his memories in order to remember his late mom.

This was a great story with a good meaning. To look deeper into a photo that what is there. It shall be interesting to write about a photo in detail as Barthes has.

    See everyone in class later.

    Reflections of Photography
when I read this story I found that it was really easy to relate to. I can recall holding pictures of a loved one that passed away, the pictures were almost forgotten while they were alive and once they passed away the picture seemed to take on a life of its own. The smells and images that you can recall are remarkable. In the story Roland states," I lived in her weakness...I nursed her. She had become my litter girl , uniting for me with that essential child she was in her first photograph." (p5) He pulled memories that discribed who his mother was.

OMG! I wanted to cry on the very last two sentences of the very last paragraph. This was an intense reading. When Barthes says,"For what I have lost is not a Figure(the Mother), but a being, and not a being, but a quality (a soul): not the indespencible, but the irreplaceable." This was so heartbreaking. I really cannot relate. I thankfully have never lost my mother or father. But I can only imagine the pain and suffering he is going through. The way Barthes describes his mother's picture was to me extremely artistic and lovely. I could see it in my head.

    Reflections on Photography

I think many people can relate to this. Lately, my mom has been showing me video clips and pictures of her childhood. I haven't really seen more than like 10 pictures of my mom and her family in their youth before recently. The other day, she showed me a clip of our family at a gathering, and it shows my grandma, beautiful and radiant, and my grandpa, strong and invincible, in their prime. My mom told me that my grandpa was VERY upset with my grandma for waring a sweater to the party when all the other ladies had coats. I though it was very funny and a reminder of just how much things have changed. To me, my grandpa looks like another person. I had never seen him with brown hair, so I asked my mom to pause the video when it showed my grandpa. I stared at it for like two minutes, speechless. It may have been too much for my mom, as she unpaused it and continued on. "I could live without the Mother (as we all do, sooner or later); but what life remained would be absolutely and entirely unqualifiable (without quality)." (7) I have always had a strong relationship with my mom, so I imagine that in the far future, when I am faced with this dilemma, I will feel similarly. My parents enrich my life beyond description.

"The Allegory of the Cave" by Plato

First, this story is mainly about seeking the higher realm of reality. The prisoners in the underground den characterize those who see truth as "literally nothing but the shadows of the images" (13). Although I admire philosophers for their constant search of wisdom, I thought, what is this reality that they speak about? I believe I see the world different from others, but they too see it different from me. I guess I am just going to have to go through that journey out of the cave and see for myself? As plato said, "But whether true or false, my opinion is that in the world of knowledge the idea of good appears last of all, and is seen only with an effort" (36).

Second, upon reading the first few paragraphs, I had the notion that the prisoners were in good state. This was due to my belief that sometimes, we are better off not knowing certain things. I was also reminded of the story of Adam and Eve, wherein Eve eats the forbidden apple that made her realize that she was indeed naked. After completing the story, however, I realized that this was a whole different story, for it talks about the 'good' reality, and not the 'bad.'

Those are the two insights that I gathered from this story.

    Reflections on Photography

Mr.Hsiao, you sir have done it again. This was such a great story to read. It brought me back to a memory of when me and my mother were having a conversation one night. My mother and I were talking about if the house burned down what items would we have taken. This talk took place when the fires around Chino Hills were spreading and getting worse. My mother and I both thought alike. The most imporatant things we would take with us would be of course the family, and also my mothers picture box. My mothers picture box has photos and memories that her and I have forgotten about. Memories which brought us closer and also have brought us to tears. The thousand of pictures that could never be replaced was what kept us smiling and made everything better. This child who lost their mother met and discovered her in a photo. Not just any photo, but a photo with history. This picture was not just any picture of her mother, but a picture that the mother had lived through. This photo was her mothers memory and history. Photographs can bring out the best and the worst in people, but the memory that will never be lost in that photo is what makes it a photo. Memories are never lost, but a photo can bring it back to life.

Hello! Here's a little about myself:

Let me see... I am all about about reading, theater, and traveling. I'll sleep in a Borders, a stage bed, or an airport if it was allowed of course. I have four brothers and sisters; I'm the oldest girl and second child. I've been both behind and on stage since my junior year of high school. I decided to take Japanese in high school because everyone else was taking either Spanish or French. Besides acting, I perform in an improvisational group. And one fact about this post is that I blogged it first. Thanks me. Ha.

Thank you Priscilla for correcting that problem!

    Camera Lucida

Ok so basically this story is super deep.
the author is trying to describe the memory of his mother not of how see was as an adult but also her childhood.
He discovered a picture of his mother in which is entitled "Winter Garden", to me it seeems as though he isnt just looking at a the picture trying to revive the memory of his mother but knowing not only her childhood but knowing her future in which her arents will divorce,in the passage from "Refelctions of Photography" Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes he states "the brother and sister, united as i knew by the discord of their parents, who were soon to divorce.

it is one thing to just look at a picture and say you like it but there is another more intense way of disecting a picture by reffering back to past present and future refferences of the being in that image.

    AOTC by Plato

When reading AOTC, I first got the idea that the cave was a safety net reality for the prisoners and that the outside was the harsh reality. "What he saw before was an illusion, but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision" (15). I believe what could be implying is that we all have a place inside ourselves that comfort us, but when we metaphorically open our eyes to the outside, we have to grow accustomed to the change. For example, when some kids turn eighteen, or are sent off to college, they have to fend for themselves. Mom and Dad are no longer there to help them out. And at first, it seems difficult, but once they are use to the idea, hard suddenly becomes simple.
Also, when the real world is present to us, and becomes a regular routine in our lives, we look at others who have it easy in our opinions, and either envy or pity them.

so the second time i read this story and i this enjoy it! the complication is still there for me but all in all it comes down the same example as used by last time...as it mentions that the horse and the color red can be amny things...in my way of seeing it was that it can be like a family...you fave your mom whose strict a daughter whose intelligent and a son whose the baby...wven though each fam member has different categories...they still belong in the same category...the family cotegory....

    Reflections on Photography

A picture is worth a million words. We can all relate to this story since I am sure many of us have pictures we cherish. The ones that bring back the happy times we once shared, and also the sad. I would say there are so many details we fail to see in pictures. One might say they saw a picture by just taking a quick glimpse, but the image really stands out when every detail is taken into consideration. Pictures of my childhood are the ones that I cherish the most, mainly because I have very few of them, I can literally count them in one hand. I find it so awkward to read this story, since recently during one of my trips to San Francisco, I happen to grab an old album my aunt had in her bedroom. While turning the pages and observing how things were back in the days, I came across pictures of my little brother and I. I was literally in tears since it was the first time I have seen a picture of us as kids. I mean literally, we looked like little rascals in our Power Ranger sweatsuits that were soo cool back in the days. I even found pictures of us playing in our old backyard making a mess as usual. This reminds me that although things are different now, we will always have a history that will never be replaced. These pictures bring back so many good memories. I can definitely relate to the author when he expresses that although his mom is no longer here, her spirit will always lie beneath. Although my brother and I are miles apart, I will always hold him close to my heart.

The story plot for the movie "The Matrix" kind of reminds me of AOTC. There is the world that Neo thinks is real only to come into the light of truth and discover that his whole reality had been a lie. It was a painful transition for him as it is for the one that comes out of the darkness of the cave and into the sunny world above.

As Glaucon says in AOTC, "Yes, he said, I think that he would rather suffer anything than entertain these false notions and live in this miserable manner" (31). It seems that what he is saying is that while one must initially suffer in the puruit of the truth or knowledge, it is better to suffer temporarily than to be trapped in the prison of ignorance. To leave the what is known, comfortable, and familiar is difficult even when one is better off in the long run. I speak from personal experience.

I grew up in Hawaii and came here two years ago because I was offered the opportunity to pursue a higher learning by my father. I took him up on his offer after some thought. My coming here to Cerritos College is like when the man steps out of the cave for the first time. I was in culture shock and away from everyone and everything I had ever known. It was somewhat difficult trying to adjust the first few months but once I did, I began to really see things differently. There is so much more to the world than I could have imagined. Good or bad, the experiences I have had here are worth it. My eyes have adjusted and I am seeing things, truly seeing things for the first time.

Wow. I read these three stories a few times and I'm so blown away. The first two were so complex, I feel like I'm still missing so much. The one that really spoke to me was "Reflections on Photography". It immediately became like two different stories to me. The author did a wonderful job of expressing what I call, 'the human condition'. She used photography to describe the process of a tragic loss, from death or other circumstances. The author also used the photograph to portray the process of grieving and preserving your memory. Absolutely amazing.

    On Shadows & Realities

In chapter seven of Plato’s Republic, On Shadows & Realities, one of the most interesting pieces of literature, Socrates intrigues his readers with the ideas that human beings are like Prisoners. I thought this was rather insulting at first, but after analyzing the text further I realized perhaps Socrates is right? Perhaps we too are chained to blindly follow, know, and believe what we are taught. I felt compelled to write on this because Socrates means to enlighten humanity with his allegory. I know first-hand that I have fallen into the susceptibility of believing in the shadows before me. I too have been chained only able to see what is “before [me], being prevented from turning round [my head]”. I guess to this day Socrates allegory still maintains some truth for individuals, including myself, in today’s society. I am still over whelmed at the idea that perhaps we all live in a cave in which we are prisoners chained to certain beliefs, chained to certain customs, or chained to certain social norms to which we must obey because we have been taught to do so since “childhood”.

    Reflections of Photography/Camera Lucida

Upon reading this text, i seemed to have detected an very familiar undercurrent of a theme which we all are so acquainted with.
It seemed to me that Mr. Barthes was pursuing a bid for immortality; though he was not so straight forward about it.
His search for his mother's photograph was to me immortalize her essence and somehow defeat inevitability. Barthes says "I had acknowledged that fatality, one of the most agonizing features of mourning, which decreed that however often i might consult such images, i could never recall her features (1). Though this might initially be interpeted as an act of nostalgic apprecation, the whole act of his search for this photograph is in itself an attempt to defeat death itself.
    to cut to the chase-
    status anxiety anyone ?

The Allegory of the Cave by Plato
The first time i read this article last semester (last year), i thought they were talking about some aliens. I was completely off. But this time, this time was different. After class participation of the definition and me re-reading it very thoroughly, now i know they were not talking about alines. Anyways, I loved (paragraph) line number 15 because if you, "see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused or their terror. At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenlly to stand up and turn his neck aroung and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains;....". To me, speaks that if one person speaks their cave (secret), not only will they feel better and "liberated" but also pain because depending how big that "cave" is, someone will eventually come out hurt by the truth... That is by far what i really got from this...

Ray... To me, the point of the picture was too have a photographic memory of her\his mother when she (mother) was ever-o-so happy. Apperantely, to me, the mother was happy when she was a little girl. When she (the mother) became older, sounds like she was getting sick and sick every time. That is why, to me, he\she wanted a picture of his\her mother when the mother was o-so-happy... Once again, this is what I got from the story...

I do find it interesting how Mr. Hsiao is incorporating blogging as a way to reflect on the text. It has also taking me last minute to do this, but I am sure i will no longer be able to. There isn’t much for me to say about myself, I am just trying to get through Cerritos College as fast as possible. Hi David Kim,

There is nothing new that you will learn, if you've taken another English class nothing should be shocking. I've have always had a better understanding after each English class and improved on my skills. I also don’t know Mr. Hsaio’s style of teaching. From what I’ve learned is that one person says they didn’t learn, they probably did not put any effort. Though I don’t know it this is the case, I am just going from my experience with my friends commenting on other instructors. I just hope to improve my writing, and understand what Mr. Hasio expects in my essays.

    Journal: Allegory of the Cave

“In Allegory of the Cave,” Plato writes, “Men would say of him that up he went and down he came without his eyes…” (34).
It could be a bit difficult to understand this allegory, but I found it pleasant to read, since I was able to make many personal connections to the context. I can relate with the person that was let out of the cave and into the “real” world. Since I was born I was raised to believe certain laws of the church. I was shown a world where I had to be submissive and obedient. Do not get me wrong. I believe submissiveness and obedience could be good depending on the circumstances and to what extent it is being used.
As I grew older, I became curious, but unlike the person in the cave, I was aware that there was more to the world than what I was being taught. I wanted to see and learn what it was, and I let myself out of my darkness.
I came out thinking that the world was evil and so were the people in it, at least the ones that did not come from my environment. It took years before I was able to speak to people that were different from me and consider them good people. It was strange for me to see the glee in two people dancing. I was told dancing was a sin. I was bewildered by the idea of wearing pants to go hiking. These few things I speak of might seem so insignificant and simple, but coming from the darkness where I was only aloud to see and hear certain things, made my experience difficult and confusing in a new environment.
I knew that if I went back and spoke of my discoveries, people would say I was crazy and that I had lost sight of what was true. You might ask, how would you know if you never tried? I can say I know, since I was a part of them once upon a time.
I felt pity for those inside, because I felt that they were missing out, but they would not understand since they were never let out. All they see is the shadows on the wall and that is all they ever want to see.
I thank God that he opened my eyes to all the wonderful things that he created and that I was once missing. He is now more truth to me, since I have learned to abide to his rules and not those of man.

    "Reflections on Photography" Camera Lucida

I had a hard time understanding the writer’s style of writing, and found it a bit confusing. Being that said I did take to heart what she was saying. I started to think about my own mother, and what she means to me. One of the things that Mr. Hsiao brought to my attention is how we as humans bring meaning to something that is inanimate.
I would call myself sentimental, and that I keep things to remind me of events or people. The line at the end of the first paragraph that made me thing was “If I were ever to show them to friends, I could doubt that these photographs would speak.” I remembered when my best friend was showing pictures of her growing up, and you could see in her eyes the effect they had on her. I could only see the picture, and I could not begin to imagine what emotions they brought out in her. I guess we attach emotions and memories to inanimate objects to help us remember or in the authors case a way to mourn. I know that I would try to find a way to always remember my mother and have something capture her essence.

    AOTC by Plato

Plato expresses the futility of defining and detaching light and dark by excessively contrasting the two. For example, the first time I read through The Allegory of the Cave by Plato I believed that the “underground den, which has a mouth open towards the light and reaching all along the den”(1) served as a firm representation of ignorance and enlightenment. The light outside the cave had mentally awakened the prisoner to declare his previous dark home as an illusion. The shadows and man made shackles appear-in the analogy- only in the cave highlighting the controlling and detrimental features of darkness which one can apply to the notorious characteristics of ignorance. The two supported the belief until I reread. I now find that the cave represents enlightenment and light represents ignorance. I find that the smarter or more enlighten someone becomes the more challenging life becomes for them. For example, one of my former teachers contained so much knowledge of the English Language and lived a life constantly working and the days he didn’t work only soured his experience. He created his own shackles by his own intelligence and exertion. I then think about how ignorance is bliss. I find it the statement true and believe someone wrapped in his or her bubble can live a more prosperous life than someone who pops them with poignant genius. Overall I can’t find the true idea Plato is making and I think no one can but learn of the futility of definition and detaching- which all philosophers feel compelled to address.

    Reflections on Photography

Amazing what a picture can mean or resemble. Just looking at a photograph can bring memories of what was and what will always remain in one. In the story the photographer was looking through some old photos to remember his mother. He came across a very old picture that defined his mother; her gentleness that has always stayed with her throughout the years, the image spoke of her. When reading the story all i could think about was a photo that i had in the back of my mind, the one i am going to use for my essay. How from just a simple picture can bring memories that can make one feel a rush of what was and the difference of now. "....the winter garden photograph was indeed essential, it achieved for me, utopically, the impossible science of the unique being" this quote kept rembling in my head to fully understand it as well as alot of other quotes in the story, but came up with a complete thought of it. What he meant by this was that it is impossible to gain the true meaning of a person from a photo rather than what character they are perceieved to be. He ruled out the impossible and found a photo that emmited her truth, who she was. It is true, a photo is not just an image, but if payed close attention too can reveal much more.

    Camera Lucida

This is only an excerpt, and most likely it is several passages pieced together, but moving on...

Simply, this is the author's method of mourning.
Mr. Barthes wrote this book on photography, but was no photographer himself. From the passage I can gather that he didn't have such a great mother and what tears at him when he views this photograph is not the fact that his mother is gone, but that she was not so great a mother while she was around despite his romantic language in describing her. It was quite a twisted relationship it appears as he notes her "sovereign innocence" or "[their] life together"(4).
The proof of this twisted ideology of his mother is evident in his stating that his "grief wanted a just image, an image which would be both justice and accuracy..." (4) Do the two of these always correlate? Are they never apart? Hardly. He also speaks about a photograph "provoking only her identity, not her truth..." (5) It seems as though he just refuses to believe that her identity, who she actually was as a person was not really her. Surely a mother could not make her son "live in her weakness" as she did to him. (6)
Growing up, I had my own terrible relationship with a parent, my father. As a naive child, I found some sort of simple rationale that my mind could wrap itself around to deny the fact that my father seldom treated me with any proper sense of love. He would act irresponsibly, ending up in jail if he weren't running around on the street and coming home only to cook some crack up or to shake down my mother for our grocery money, but he always knew how to turn it own when he really needed something and force would not work. I believed he loved me because, well, isn't that what fathers just do?
Apparently this is not so, and although he has not passed, I had to, at some point, accept the fact that my father had not loved me. Ever. Do you think this is an easy to pill to swallow without the side effect of finding oneself to be with great error that was cause for this lack of proper love? Absolutely not.

It's a shame the author passed shortly after this publication because it seems he never did get to the acceptance of real truth... or a just picture.

Prof. Hsiao, thanks for the encouragment to continue blogging. My weekend was staying at home blogging, doing homework for three other classes and I spent more time comprehending the three reading and trying to have an idea and concept of what the three authors are conveying to the readers. I know there's unhidden quotes that I should be understanding, but just trying to make out the question is a challenge and more difficult is trying to answer the question. I ask my self, "should I interpret and write how I feel about quotes I pick out"? or "should I interpret the best way I can that relates to everyone else?" Nonetheless, I will be reading these three impressions until I feel comfortable with "my understanding of the readings.

Day 3 in class was calming more than it was nervous these past couple of days. I'm starting to enjoy the activities presented, but I know I still need to get comfortable enough to participate and start communicating with other students. Thanks Trini and Jay for welcoming me and vise versa.

    To: Kayla Lopez

Hey Kayla don't feel bad about blogging 'cause your not the only one who is getting use to this part of the class. I've been trying to do it and every time I log in I have to click follow or add the page AGAIN so it's been kinda hard but I believe this is just a matter of time to get use to it. I also get a message that says "No empty message" after I've finish typing as crazy and click "post comment" so I guess it would be a good idea to type it in Word format first for then just copy and paste.
    ,

let's try to do our best.....

    To Laura and Maira,

Thanks! It's really reassuring to know that I'm not the only one having some difficulties. Hopefully, I get used to this whole thing soon.

“Reflections on Photography” Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes

Coping with the loss of a loved one is never easy, especially if said loved one is a parent. I am quite certain people have different ways of doing so, but it wasn’t until after reading this story that I discovered how insensitive I could be to the way other people choose to endure their loss. While now I can understand how Barthes could be so devastated over the loss of his mother. I found it difficult to relate to the way Barthes dealt with losing his mother. Near the end of Camera Lucida Barthes says “I could live without the Mother (as we all do, sooner or later); but what life remained would be absolutely and entirely unqualifiable (without quality).” (Line 7) Here is a perfect example of what I mean by me not being able to relate to the way Barthes chose to deal with the death of his mother. Thanks to my father, I grew up instilled with a distinct set of ideologies on life. Many of these same ideologies have stuck with me to this day. In this case, my father’s views on death are what kept me from being able to relate to Barthes.

To my father, when a person dies we (as in, the people losing the loved one) are not really losing them. The memories and experiences we shared with the deceased person keeps them alive in our hearts. This leads me to my next point. When Barthes says “What I have lost is not a figure (the mother), but a being; and not a being, but a quality (a soul),” (Line 7) more of my father’s words came to mind. My father believes (as I do too) that we lose their body, but not their soul. My father also raised me to believe that while the body dies, the soul is simply resting until the time of rapture when the souls of the departed will be awaked to face judgment. My father used to read the bible to me growing up, and these beliefs he shared with me brought me comfort many times after losing someone close to me. I guess it never really hit me that not everyone believes this, and furthermore I had not taken into account how some folks don’t really believe in anything. I can see now that if it were not for my father instilling his beliefs in me, I too might have the same outlook on life as Barthes after losing someone as important to me as my mother. I feel both enlightened and embarrassed that it took me this long to come to this conclusion.

    To Carmen Parra,

Thank you for the response to my post. I have never admitted to feeling the same way. I have always said to myself that I would want to go before my mother. I look at my mother and see a woman that has gone through so much, and has survived all of it. I just do not see the strength in me that I know she holds within herself. My mom was sick for awhile back in 2008 and 2009, and it crossed my mind frequently how it would be to live without my mother? Every moment of me trying to come up with an answer I would cry, because there was never an answer to my question. It is so hard to imagine life without our parents. I lost my father in 2005...wow its been almost 5 years, but even that was hard. I guess all we can do is hand it over to God!
